Things to Remember...

  • All states require their drivers to carry cheap liability auto insurance against injuries or damage they may cause to other people or their property

  • Make sure you see what discounts that you are eligible for

There is no one-size-fits-all, “right” policy. The best car insurance company for you depends on several factors and should be the result of informed comparison shopping.

  • Gender
  • Yearly mileage
  • Neighborhood
  • Driving record
  • Make of car

However, there are steps that you can take to get the best car insurance rates for the most protection. Start by learning the kinds of car insurance coverage.

Kinds of Car Insurance

All states require their drivers to carry cheap liability auto insurance against injuries or damage they may cause to other people or their property. Minimum insurance requirements differ from state to state.

Possible state car insurance requirements include:

  • Bodily injury liability
  • Property damage liability
  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Personal injury protection
  • Uninsured motorist

The extent of liability coverage is expressed in three numbers, such as 25/50/20. If this number represented your personal injury car insurance coverage, the company would pay each injured person’s medical expenses up to a limit of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident.

Property damage would be covered up to a limit of $20,000 per incident.

Collision covers any kind of accident, not just one with another vehicle, and comprehensive covers the loss of a car from theft or a natural disaster. These coverages can be expensive and make the most sense for policyholders with new or expensive cars.

Some states also require personal injury protection, which pays the policyholder and any passengers for lost wages and medical expenses resulting from a car accident.

This coverage may be most valuable for those without good medical and disability insurance from another source.

Uninsured motorist insurance covers you when you’re hit by an uninsured driver, or when you’re the victim of a hit-and-run driver.

How Much Insurance Do You Need?

It’s too late after a car accident to go rifling through your auto insurance policy to see what it covers. Conversely, it makes no sense to carry more insurance than you’ll need. When deciding how much insurance to cover, consider factors such as:

  • Age and condition of your car
  • Your driving habits
  • How frequently you drive
  • Your neighborhood

For example, it makes little sense to carry expensive comprehensive insurance on an old clunker. If you have excellent health and disability insurance through your employer, you may opt out of personal injury protection insurance, or buy only the required minimum.

On the other hand, if you’re buying a policy for your teenaged son, it may make perfect sense to consider carrying more than the required minimum coverage.

If you live in a high-crime area and you just bought a new car, comprehensive or uninsured motorist insurance may be a wise choice.

Comparing Insurance Companies

There are a few different things that you can do to make sure that you are getting the best rate for the coverage that you need.

  • Take driver education courses
  • Install anti-theft or safety equipment on their cars
  • Bundle car and home insurance
  • Have a clean driving record
  • Belong to certain groups or associations
  • Have been loyal customers for many years

Different companies will give you certain discounts that can be applied to your policy. Make sure to ask your insurance company about available discounts.

Geico

Geico is praised by online reviewers for having generally low rates. The company is rated reachable and friendly, though some customers complained about the cancellation and issue resolution service.

The company’s website allows customers to receive quotes, make payments or enter claims. The company also offers special discount programs for federal employees and members of the military.

Progressive

Progressive is praised online for offering customers more options than most of its competitors. Its website allows customers to compare its rates with those of its competitors.

The company also offers customers the “Name Your Price” and “Snapshot” programs.

The “Name Your Price” program allows customers to set the price they want to pay and then build coverage around it.

With the “Snapshot” program, customers install a device in their cars that reveal how safely they drive.

Some have criticized the device as a violation of customer privacy, but installation is optional and according to the company, may save customers as much as 30 percent off their premiums.

Allstate

Allstate offers its customers programs like “Your Choice Auto,” which offers options like accident forgiveness, a safe driving bonus check for “every six months of accident-free driving,” and a completely new car replacement if you total a new car within three model years of its purchase.

The company has, however, been frequently criticized for offering low initial rates that later rose.

American Family

American Family Insurance received a 2011 “Highest Customer Satisfaction Award” from J.D. Power and Associates based on ratings from consumers who had recently purchased auto insurance.

Respondents praised the company’s policy offerings and price. The company website offers consumers interactive tools that help them review the types of insurance they may need, mobile apps, chat options and a claim center.

Once you’ve done your homework, your comparison shopping will have direction according to the auto insurance coverage options and companies available to you.
