Travelers History

The history of the Travelers Insurance Company reveals that Travelers actually began as two different companies.

Alexander Wilkin founded the first company, St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company, in 1853, as a way to protect the public from the growing risk of fire.

The second company began in 1864 as The Travelers Insurance Company.

The original Travelers Insurance Company was founded by J.G. Batterson as a way to insure travelers who were traveling by train or steamboat against personal injury and death.

In 1866 the Travelers Insurance Company expanded its coverage options to include all types of accidents, not just those incurred while traveling.

Two of the more interesting claims that the Travelers Insurance Company paid out for that year were for a ticket agent who broke his leg while trying to stop a runaway horse, and a carpenter who broke his collarbone after he became entangled in his dancing partner’s hoop skirt.

Travelers Auto Insurance and Claim Payouts

The St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company built a solid reputation of being a reliable company after paying all claims after two of the biggest disasters in the United States.

The first disaster was the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871. This fire destroyed over seventeen thousand buildings and was responsible for killing 275 and leaving more that 100,000 people homeless.

The second disaster was the San Francisco earthquake, which occurred on April 18, 1906.

The earthquake started a fire that spread over 520 blocks and destroyed more than 28,000 buildings.

In both instances when other insurance companies could not afford to pay out there policyholder’s claims the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company was able to pay in full without any financial risk to the company.

The St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company was in such good financial shape that it survived the 1929 stock market crash and Great Depression without having to cut any salaries or lay off any workers.

Travelers and the Titanic

The Travelers Insurance Company saw its fair share of tragedy as well.

In 1912 the Titanic sank and the Travelers Insurance Company paid more than $1 million in life insurance benefits and accident claims to the beneficiaries of the victims.

1919 was a better year for the Travelers Insurance Company when they issued the first aerial transportation insurance policy in history.

This policy covered public liability, life, property damage, workers compensation, and airplane trip accident tickets.

The first person to ever to travel by plane with an insurance policy was President Woodrow Wilson.
