Allstate Insurance History

Allstate Insurance began as a division of Sears, Roebuck, and Company in 1931. The company name came from the name of a tire sold in the Sears catalog.

By the end of its first year, Allstate Insurance had more than 4,000 insurance policies written. After the success of the company’s first insurance agent at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, the company switched from selling their policies by direct mail to agents in 1934.

The beginning of the 1940s saw women becoming insurance agents for the company while the majority of men were away at war. After the war was over, it was predicted that the company would write around $13 million in premiums by the end of the decade.

By 1949, the company had more than 70,000 policyholders and almost 3,000 employees.

In 1952, the company formed the Allstate Foundation as a way to develop partnerships with nonprofit organizations and help local communities.

By the end of the 20th Century the company accomplished the following feats:

  • Expanded fully into Canada
  • Created the Allstate Motor Club
  • Expanded into the Japanese insurance market
  • Became a full partner with the Neighborhood Housing Services
  • Dealt with Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Andrew
  • Became the largest company to go public in the United States
  • Started an online presence with their website
  • Formed the Allstate Federal Savings Bank

The company ended the 1900s with more than $20 billion in premiums, 14 million policyholders, and 40,000 employees, which included more than 15,000 insurance agents.

Today, Allstate Insurance continues to grow and find ways to expand its business into new markets.
