What You Should Know About GM Auto Insurance

GM started in Flint, Michigan in the early 1900s. Although the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and had to discontinue some of the vehicle models, the company received help from the government and is still going strong today.

GM auto insurance had been underwritten by subsidiaries of American Family and known as OnStar Insurance. GM dropped American Family in 2023 and OnStar Insurance policies are now underwritten and issued by OnStar National Insurance Company and GM National Insurance Company. GM also offers home insurance policies sold through OnStar Insurance Services, Inc.

In early 2024, GM Financial announced OnStar Insurance will be renamed General Motors Insurance. OnStar insurance is currently available only in Arizona, Illinois, and Texas, but additional states are coming soon, such as Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

GM Auto Insurance Coverage Options

Is driving without insurance ever okay? All states require their drivers to carry some amount of auto insurance or provide substantial proof of paying for expenses in case of an accident.

According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, your loan company may require you to carry full coverage insurance if you’re financing your vehicle. Otherwise, you’ll need at least the minimum amount of liability insurance required by the auto insurance laws in your state of residence.

The table below shows different types of policies and coverage available to you, along with what they do.

Types of Auto Insurance Coverage
Auto Coverage TypePurpose of Coverage
Bodily injury liabilityPart of your liability coverage that pays for medical bills if you've injured someone else in an automobile accident
CollisionCovers damage to your car after an automobile accident
ComprehensiveCovers damage to your car that happens when you're not driving
Personal injury protectionCovers medical expenses for you or your passengers after an automobile accident
Property damage liabilityThe other part of liability coverage that covers the cost of any property damage you've caused in an automobile accident
Uninsured/underinsured motoristCovers the costs if you're in an automobile accident caused by a driver with little or no car insurance

Owners of Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC models that are model ear 2016 or newer can opt for usage-based car insurance and potentially get the best rate, as GM can use technology (telematics) already working in those connected vehicles to personalize a premium which is based on driving behaviors.

For those with an older GM vehicle or a non-GM vehicle, GM offers traditional auto insurance coverage.

While you don’t have to have a paid OnStar plan to be eligible for OnStar Insurance, having it means you’ll also have the advantage of a unique roadside assistance program, including automatic crash response, automatic emergency services contact, and remote vehicle diagnostics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does General Motors have auto insurance?

Yes, GM auto insurance is currently available under OnStar Insurance.

What instance does General Motors offer?

General Motors currently offers auto insurance and home insurance through OnStar Insurance.

Who does General Motors own?

General Motors brands include Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC.

What is the best auto insurance under GM auto insurance?

Owners of GM-branded vehicles can get exclusive discounts and programs OnStar Insurance, which aren’t available to drivers of non-GM vehicles.

Can I use my own insurance instead of GM auto insurance for my GM vehicle?

While GM Auto Insurance is designed to cater specifically to GM vehicle owners, you may have the option to use your own insurance provider instead.

However, it’s essential to review your insurance policy and consult with your insurance provider to ensure that your coverage meets the necessary requirements for your GM vehicle.

Does GM auto insurance offer SR-22 insurance?

If you’ve had traffic citations, automobile accidents, and/or auto insurance claims, you may be considered a high-risk driver. Normally, high-risk drivers are required to purchase SR-22 auto insurance, which isn’t available through all companies, so it may take some looking around to find coverage.

GM Insurance does provide SR-22 insurance, but it can be expensive. The filing fee to get SR-22 insurance is only $15 to $35.

What kinds of questions should I be prepared for when purchasing my auto insurance policy?

When you apply for an auto insurance policy, you’ll be asked a series of demographic questions such as your name, age, and sex. You’ll also be asked a variety of other questions aimed at assessing your risk as a driver.

Auto insurance companies will want to know about your driving record, the type of vehicle you’re insuring, and whether you’ve had any tickets or accidents in the past.

Are there benefits to using an agent to purchase auto insurance?

While it’s possible to buy your auto insurance policy directly instead of through an agent, this method has some possible downsides. If you choose to go with a local agent, you’ll get the advantage of more personalized service.

This experience is just not possible when you purchase directly from a large company. With a local agent, you may speak to the same person about your policy every time.

How does adding drivers to my auto insurance policy affect my rates?

Adding a driver to car insurance means that your automobile will be spending more time on the road. Since a second person will be driving it, auto insurance companies will raise your rates.

For example, adding a teenager to your policy can raise your auto insurance rates since teenage drivers are inexperienced, high-risk drivers.

Why would my provider cancel my auto insurance policy?

Your auto insurance provider may cancel your policy if you do any of the following:

  • Get your driver’s license suspended or revoked
  • Lie during the application process
  • Fail to pay your auto insurance payments
