American Family Insurance opened its doors on October 3, 1927, in Madison, WI. Herman Wittwer called it Farmers Mutual Insurance Company (not to be confused with one of Allstate’s current competitors).
Its only product was auto insurance and its target market was farmers because Wittwer believed farmers presented lower risks than city drivers. In his view, farmers drove less often and not at all in the winter. Now, American Family Insurance, or AmFam, offers auto, home, and life insurance as well.

Another standout is they actually reward you for making the switch to American Family from another provider. They also offer loyalty discounts.
The odd things about the discounts: they do not offer discounts for farm vehicles or going green with your vehicle. The former because American Family got their start insuring farmers, and the latter because of their commitment to the environment.
If you are engaged, newlyweds, or married, and having those discounts are important to you, American Family does not offer married couple discounts.

A.M. Best for American Family
The A.M. Best rating focuses on insurer financial strength and creditworthiness. Ratings are periodically updated. When it comes to the rating at A.M. Best: A, or “Excellent”, rating.
Better Business Bureau for American Family
The Better Business Bureau, or BBB for short, is “an ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers trust each other”. These ratings are based solely on business/customer trust. Customers can either praise businesses, or file complaints, though customer reviews do not factor into ratings. Complaint history, however, does.
BBB’s ratings range from A+ to F, the lowest rating. Businesses that are BBB accredited “means BBB has determined that the business meets accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints.”
Unfortunately, American Family Insurance is not BBB Accredited. 273 complaints were closed in the last three years, and 72 complaints were closed in the last year.

American Family Insurance has a long history stretching all the way back to the 1920s when the company first began.
In the 1930s, they established the National Mutual Casualty Company, which focused on protecting non-farmers. Then, they crossed over to selling insurance in Minnesota. In the 1950s, they started selling sickness and accident insurance. In 1958, they renamed themselves to American Family Insurance and expanded to 10 states within a year.
In 1959, AmFam entered the computer age with a RAMAC. It was the size of a room and could process a week’s worth of applications and 1,000 renewal notices in just 2.5 hours.
In 1963, they renamed themselves one last time, to American Family Mutual Insurance company. The famous jingle you probably hum was created in 1965.

How to Get a Quote Online (Step-by-Step Screenshots)
You will not need much to get a quote from American Family. All you need is your vehicle make, model, household information, and the kind of coverage you want.
Once you have all that:
Step 1: Input your zip code and the type of insurance you want (car). Hit the “start quoting” button.
Step 2: Enter your information, such as your address, date of birth, and email. Verify your address and click continue.

American Family does not seem responsive to complaints about its app. It does not seem responsive to praise, either. This is one area where they could improve.

The Bottom Line
American Family offers multiple overage options and 27 discounts. It offers the MyAmFam mobile app that makes it easy for drivers to pay bills and contact roadside assistance, also the KnowYourDrive program will track your driving behavior through your smartphone and award discounts if you are a safe driver.
When it comes to claims satisfaction, American Family scored an 853 on the J.D. Power 2018 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, which is below the average of 861.
It is in line with companies like MetLife and Esurance, but below other competitors, like Amica Mutual, Farmers and Travelers. On the Consumer Reports review of car insurance, American Family Insurance scored an 89, with high ratings for ease of reaching an agent and timeliness of claims payments.
One of its largest disadvantages, though, is that American Family is only available in 19 states.

American Family Insurance is a terrible and shady company. They’re only in it to make ungodly amounts of money and will not provide a fair and reasonable service for your premiums. They regularly screw their ‘family’ members. They don’t care for, or about their clients.
They expect us to pay, pay, and pay. Which, we do willingly, in good faith, expecting that if some unfortunate day, if INSURANCE is needed, that all those premium payments will be there for us, that American Family will be there for us to take care of us, to INSURE us and our things.
Well, guess what…if you get ‘profiled’ for anything even something that has no direct effect on them, they’ll deem you a risk (even after 13-14 years of on-time payments and ZERO claims) and cancel your policy. First, they might raise your rates but then later decide to cancel your policy.
I’m fortunate I’ve never been in an accident and have never needed them. I can’t even imagine how that would have turned out. I’ve paid 10’s of thousands of dollars to American Family in home, auto and recreational vehicle insurance and they canceled my policy.
I got a ticket (my first in 4 or 5 years) and forgot to pay it. Through it in the glove box and totally gapped it. Then 9-12 months later I get pulled over in a mall parking lot while dropping my daughter off at the front door of a Chucky Cheese by an uptight policeman. He was all about the loading zone rules. He later informs me that my license had been suspended for an unpaid traffic violation. What?! Really? Regardless; my now 2 tickets (the gapped one in my glove box and the newest one ‘driving after suspension’ were paid and my license reinstated later that day.
Good to go, right? Nope! American Family, my trusted insurance company that’s supposedly has got my back if something bad happens to me or my family… flushes my policy down the toilet and cancels my policy after 14 years. No call from my local agent. Nope, just a form letter telling me I was dropped. Not very nice. But, I guess that’s how they take care of their family.
American Family is a business selling financial protection service and has a right to make a profit. But I think American Family should be profiled as high risk and as a company to avoid if possible. They should be acknowledged in the open market for what they really are as a company that doesn’t have your best interest in mind, that they forgot about the quality of the service and only care about the profits.
If you want service go somewhere else for insurance. I don’t know where you should go because like I said I’ve been with American for 13-14 years.
Oh, and let’s recognize THAT the ‘business’ American Family…is made up of people, lots and lots of people, the people who work for American Family should be ashamed. Ashamed of the policies they write, the procedures they follow, for being weak and powerless to the system/process.
I know in today’s tough economy everyone needs a job…but hurting other hard working families (that’s got to be hard on your karma) some jobs are like cigarettes, their just bad for you.
Take my advice…don’t join the Family. In life, we may not be able to choose our family but we can choose our insurance providers and American Family should be avoided, shamed and then forgotten about.

My family and 1 were involved in an accident with someone who has their company.Am Fam has taken 100 percent responsibility. Which means nothing. We are a month into the process.
The auto adjuster has offered me 60 percent of what it costs to replace the truck. He said he would be easy to get along with. Praised the great condition on my truck. Ak me to send receipts and comparisons. He didn’t use them. He words, Dealers over price. What a joke

After more than 20 years with American Family. I am cancelling my car and HO6 home insurance policy with American family effective immediately.
I will be writing a formal complaint and review to American family.
I have consulted with a legal representative. He and I feel I have been misrepresented by my agent. My agent stated she did not understand the HO6 policy till after I filed a claim.
The claims department has acted in bad faith. The claims department sent me a letter claiming I was not covered. After I called to say I am covered, then claiming I am partially covered.
My dream is out there and I will find someone else to protect it.
