The Norwegian Assurance Company and the Norwegian Globe Company combined in 1921 and formed the General Casualty and Surety Reinsurance Corporation. The company focused solely on writing casualty reinsurance.

In 1923, the company was purchased by a group of American businessmen who renamed the company the General Reinsurance Corporation.

In 1945, the General Reinsurance Company merged with the Mellon Indemnity Company, which changed the direction of the company in the future.
