Things to Remember...
  • WellPoint is not an auto insurance company
  • WellPoint provides a variety of health insurance benefits
  • WellPoint sells their products through independent insurance agents

WellPoint is, unfortunately, not an auto insurance company. WellPoint is a health benefits company and is the largest one in the United States.

They currently have 34 million members, which means that one of nine people in America has medical coverage through WellPoint or one of its subsidiaries.

WellPoint was technically founded in 2004. However, it is the product of a merger between Anthem, Inc., which was founded in 1946 and WellPoint Health, which was founded in 1982.

This merger led to the creation of WellPoint. So, although the company by its current name is only a few years old, it is part of a company that has been around for far longer.

WellPoint became Anthem, Inc. in 2014.

WellPoint Insurance Products

WellPoint sells a variety of insurance products for both businesses and individuals/families.

These plans include:

  • PPO
  • HMO
  • Dental
  • Indemnity
  • COBRA

The subsidiaries of WellPoint include:

  • Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Anthem Blue Cross
  • Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia
  • Anthem Life Insurance
  • American Imaging Management
  • Anthem Workers’ Compensation
  • DeCare Dental
  • HealthCore
  • HealthLink
  • Golden West Dental

  • National Government Services, Inc.
  • Resolution Health, Inc.
  • UniCare

WellPoint doesn’t provide a list of its other locations on its website.

However, they do provide a map that shows where each of their offices and the offices of their subsidiaries are located, so that you can at least get an idea of which states they have offices in.

WellPoint Agents

WellPoint uses independent agents to sell their products, as do all of their affiliates. WellPoint products are available across the U.S.

As a consumer, an independent agent means that you can choose someone geographically close to you and you can choose an agent that you like.

Additionally, your agent will be able to provide you with quotes from more companies than just WellPoint if you want to compare rates between companies.

WellPoint, however, doesn’t offer an agent finder tool on their website to help you find an agent in your area.

Considering that they are the largest insurer in the country, it is likely that you will easily find an agent in your area.

But if you want to take all of the guesswork out of the process, call WellPoint directly and ask them for numbers of agents in your zip code.

WellPoint Careers

WellPoint has a very comprehensive job site available for those of you looking to work for the company.

The benefits of working for WellPoint include:

  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Service recognition awards and bonuses
  • 401(k) with matching company contributions after 1 year
  • Life insurance
  • Long-term disability insurance
  • Medical insurance (choice of HMO or PPO)
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Disability insurance
  • Flex spending accounts

When searching for a job, you can search by area of talent, job category, state, city, or keyword.

WellPoint Quotes

WellPoint doesn’t offer a quote option on their website, which means that you will want to contact an independent agent to handle your quote for you.

Because your final quote may be contingent on a medical exam, it could take up to a week or longer to get a final quote for your health insurance coverage.

If you are a company looking for a quote, the process will actually be faster because it will be based on a risk assessment rather than the individual health of each of your employees.
