Seaton Insurance Company is a Rhode Island-based casualty and property company originally established in 1901.

Seaton has been through several incarnations and company names, including Northwestern Mutual Fire Insurance Association, Northwestern Mutual Insurance Association, Unigard Mutual Insurance Association, and Unigard Security Insurance Association.

This company should not be confused with Minnesota-based Seaton Financial Insurance Agency or QBE America’s Unigard subsidiary.

It is unclear whether or not Seaton Insurance Company is still writing new policies or even conducting normal business. Although we were able to uncover their business address in Rhode Island, they do not maintain a website to the best of our knowledge.

Seaton Insurance Company Finances

Seaton Insurance Company appears to have a long list of financial difficulties. Regardless of which business name we search for, we see a common pattern of the company being acquired by an investor who then turns around and sells them off again in a very quick manner.

The last acquisition record we could find was from a company known as Virginia Holdings Ltd. which itself was in financial distress as late as 2008. It appears Seaton’s new parent company might be a private equity investor operating under the name ESRG.

Furthermore, Seaton Insurance Company is listed in several court cases as being currently in runoff. In fact, they have been in runoff since 2008.

This means that the company is not writing new auto insurance, or other insurance, policies at a fast enough rate to replace the ones they are losing.

Sometimes runoff is an intentional business strategy when an insurance company is shifting gears; other times it’s forced upon them due to poor performance. Regardless, a three-year runoff situation does not bode well for Seaton.

Seaton Insurance Company Claims

If this company did business similar to other auto insurance providers, claims would be initiated by contacting either a local agent or a direct company representative.

Paperwork would be filed, the auto insurance claim reviewed, and payments made accordingly.

However, a perusal of the litigation pending against Seaton indicates that its claim service was anything but normal. As previously stated, there is plenty of litigation against Seaton involving their  claims payouts.

“Bad Faith” is a common term found in many of these lawsuits.

In a legal sense, bad faith is defined as an insurance company not doing everything in its power to uphold its part of an insurance contract.

A company like Seaton Insurance, with a history of bad faith litigation, is one whose claims department is probably not at the top of its game.

Seaton Insurance Company Careers

It goes without saying that seeking a job with Seaton Insurance Company is probably not a wise thing to do, even if they still are in business.

Any insurance company that has been in run-off for such a long period of time is one that probably doesn’t have plans for staying in business permanently.

Additionally, the amount of litigation filed against Seaton indicates that their business is on extremely shaky ground. It might very well be that the settling of all this litigation may force the closing of the company.

Seaton Insurance Company is a great example for American consumers to be careful about whom they choose to provide their auto insurance coverage.

Even though Seaton has a long history of being in business, it also has a long history of frequent name changes and litigation.

It would be wise for individuals to utilize modern technology in searching out insurance companies before making a decision.

There is ample evidence on the Internet to provide red flags for anyone considering Seaton Insurance Company.
