Saga Group is unusual among the auto insurance companies we’ve reviewed in two ways. First, they are a UK company doing business strictly within that geographic region and second, their products and services are geared only towards those who are 50 or older.

The company was founded in 1959 by Mr. Sidney De Haan and acquired in 2004 by British private equity investor Charterhouse. Saga later merged with Great Britain’s Automobile Association under a new holding company called Acromas Holdings Limited.

Saga Group Insurance Products


Because of the nature and location of Saga’s business, this review will be significantly different than most of the others we’ve done. It’s important to note that this company is not only engaged in insurance services, but they also offer many other services aimed at enriching the lives of the UK’s senior citizens.

If you’re a UK resident age 50 or older, Saga Group is the only company you’ll ever need for all your insurance needs. Their insurance products cover auto, home, life, travel, personal accident, accidental death, unemployment, and many more needs.

In terms of auto insurance alone, they provide their customers with everything from basic coverage to full umbrella coverage, including motorhome policies.

Auto insurance in the UK is somewhat different than it is here in the states, so policies with Saga Group are broken down into different categories.

The UK version of our minimum liability would cover personal injuries and property damage to victims of an accident within the UK. Drivers who wish to take their cars into neighboring countries purchase extra coverage in the same way American citizens would when driving to Mexico.

One of Saga’s most popular products is a policy that allows unlimited driving anywhere in the European Union.

Saga Group Agents

Again, because the nature of car insurance is different in the UK, Saga Group may not use a network of local agents in the same way American companies would.

We can’t confirm this one way or the other, but a thorough search of a Saga Group website did not yield any information about local agents.

If agents are used, the most likely scenario would involve individual consumers calling local agencies in their city to find out if they represent Saga Group.

If Saga doesn’t utilize independent agents, purchasing their insurance is probably based on a direct-to-customer model. That means you purchase policies directly from them using their website or by calling a company representative.

There are a couple of nationally known American insurance providers, like Progressive, who follow this same model. Companies like this prefer to deal directly with customers in order to eliminate some of the problems inherent with using local agents.

Saga Group Claims


Saga Group’s claims service is very similar to what you and I experience here at home. The only major difference is that with this company you don’t need to fill out any paperwork on your own.

Their website suggests that customers call them directly using the telephone number provided on their policy documents.

The company maintains five call centers around the UK, which are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

When you do call to initiate a claim, a company representative will ask you all the appropriate questions and tell you what you need to do.

Their website recommends that you do not try to deal directly with any other individuals involved in the accident on your own. They suggest you simply give the other parties the Saga name and telephone number and let them deal with the situation for you.

From the looks of it, Saga Group’s claims service aims to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible for their customers.
