A Medicus auto insurance review leads to the Medicus Insurance Company which is not an auto insurance company at all. It is a medical liability insurance company for surgeons, physicians, and those professionals who work with them.

The company was founded by insurance professionals and medical professionals who work together to provide coverage.

Even though Medicus does not offer auto insurance, you can still compare auto insurance rates right now by entering your zip code now!

Medicus was founded in 2006 by a group of professionals in both the medical and insurance industries.

The company was founded because many physicians found it hard to work with insurance companies who seemed unable to understand where physicians were coming from; so they wanted a board of directors that included physicians.

Medicus Insurance Company History

With the increasing amounts of lawsuits filed against doctors and the higher payouts that are being awarded, it is more important than ever for doctors, and those who assist them, to have the right kind of liability protection.

Since Medicus has several doctors on staff, they understand the unique needs of the physicians who are seeking liability insurance.

Doctors and surgeons that work for a hospital are almost always covered by a hospital’s liability insurance. However, Medicus was founded with the idea that sometimes this coverage is not enough.

Because of this idea that a hospital’s liability coverage is not enough, Medicus offers individual liability plans to physicians who have a private practice as well as supplemental plans to physicians who work for a hospital.

Medicus Insurance Company Products

As stated above, Medicus offers liability insurance to private practice physicians, surgeons, and support staff as well as supplemental coverage to those employed by a hospital.

Every Medicus policyholder is also able to take part in Medicus Advantage Gold and Risk Management options.

Medicus Advantage Gold is additional free coverage to help cover the ever-changing technological elements of the medical field. The additional coverage offered is four-fold.

Security and Privacy Insurance in the amount of $50,000 is the first part of the policy. It covers online breaches of information or identity theft that happens through the physician’s website.

The second aspect of Advantage Gold is Regulatory Coverage up to $50,000. This option covers:

  • billing errors
  • HIPAA breaches
  • Stark proceedings

It includes coverage of online and offline information in these categories as well as notification costs to those involved.

The third part of the coverage is Patient Notification and Credit Monitoring up to $50,000.

This option covers the cost of letting patients know about breaches of information and covers the cost of providing those patients with credit monitoring for 12 months after the breach of information occurs.

The last part of the Advantage Gold additional coverage is Data Recovery Cost up to $5,000. Once a breach occurs, this will cover the cost of recovering or replacing data that has been lost or compromised.

The amounts set are for the free additional coverage. If higher amounts are desired, an additional cost can be added to a policy.

Risk Management is also offered free of charge to policy holders.

This includes free risk management seminars, patient safety seminars, and other training opportunities to lower risks that cause lawsuits.

Some of the seminars can be taken for credit hours and some seminars will help reduce the cost of the next year’s premium or renewal costs.

Medicus Insurance Company Claims

Claim filing works differently with Medicus than when filing auto insurance or other types of claims. In the case of professional medical liability insurance, when a claim is filed it is by a patient towards a physician instead of being filed by the policyholder.

Once the claim is filed, Medicus, together with the physician, will decide if the claim should be paid outright or if the physician will need an attorney to represent him.

If the case goes to court, Medicus will pay the attorney and court fees according to the terms set forth in the policy.

Medicus is under contract with a litigation company that specializes in representing physicians and other medical professionals in malpractice and breach of information lawsuits.

Some policies have a vicarious liability rider added that holds the physician personally responsible in some cases. Physicians should be sure to understand these limitations before signing the policy and agreeing to its terms and conditions.
