Eastern Mutual Insurance Company History

The Eastern Mutual Insurance Company began as a fire insurance association in 1855 in Norton Hill, New York. The company began with just 348 policies that totaled around $100,000.

The company saw its first sign of continued growth in 1907 when it expanded its business from its original territories that included four towns into Greene and Albany counties. The company officially became an incorporated business just three years later, in 1910.

No span of time saw more changes for the successful Eastern Mutual Insurance Company than the 1940s through the 1960s.

During this period of time the company began billing its policyholders in a completely different way. Under the new procedure, the policyholders were billed for expenses and losses that had accumulated in the previous year.

Also during this time, the company branched out into the reinsurance sector of the industry by working with the Guilderland Mutual Reinsurance Association.

In the early 1950s, the company expanded its line of insurance products to include more than just fire. In 1960, there was a significant merger with the New Baltimore Mutual Insurance Association that set the tone for the company for the rest of the decade, as significant changes were made to how the company operated.

By the 1970s, the company had changed its name to the Eastern Cooperative Insurance Company and expanded its product line to include personal and commercial liability insurance coverage.

By writing liability insurance, the company was able to write farm, home, and mobile home insurance.

In 1992, the company merged with the Schoharie and Schenectady Mutual Insurance Company. This merger caused the company’s name to be changed to the present Eastern Mutual Insurance Company.

Nearly 160 years after it was founded, the company now has more than 100 offices in New York State and has expanded its business significantly.

In 2000, the company became a member of the Union Mutual Group after it became associated with the Union Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
