General Re Life Corporation History

 

In 1921, the Norwegian Assurance Company and the Norwegian Globe Company combined to form the General Casualty and Surety Reinsurance Corporation.

This new company specialized in writing casualty reinsurance policies. This company was bought by a group of Americans and renamed the General Reinsurance Corporation in 1923.

The company was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1980. Within this same time, the Company purchased the United States Aviation Underwriters Company, General Star Insurance, Genesis Insurance, and many other important acquisitions.

In 1998, General Reinsurance was purchased by the Berkshire Hathaway Group. It was not until 2009 that the General Reinsurance Company fully purchased the Cologne Reinsurance Company and changed the company name to General Reinsurance AG.
