Things to Remember...

  • Canal Insurance specializes as an auto insurance company for commercial and business use
  • Canal Insurance offers two types of trucking insurance policies, standard and preferred
  • Canal Insurance provides a variety of ways customers can specialize their policies to their personal needs

Canal Insurance was established back in the early 1920s when Bill Timmons opened Central Realty and the Wm. R. Timmons Agency.

Unfortunately, when the Great Depression came in the 1930s, the success both had seen for nearly a decade became a bit more challenging.

So, in the 1930s, Bill Timmons managed to found a niche for insurance for long-haul truckers in South Carolina while lobbying for insurance rights in North Carolina and Georgia.

In 1942, Bill Timmons acquired Canal Insurance Company for $17,500 and in 1944 had written its very first premium. Tragically, in 1948 Bill Timmons was killed in an automotive accident, but stockholders elected T.J. Mims as the President.

Canal Auto Insurance History

By the end of the 1950s, Canal was licensed in transportation insurance in 27 states. As the 1960s rolled in, the company was now operating in 42 states, its assets were nearing $6 million.

Although the 70s was a tumultuous time in the U.S.’s financial history, Canal continually grew both its team and financial strength.

For this reason, Canal garnered an A+ rating from A.M. Best.

In the 1980s and 90s, the company continued to flourish, and in 1989 reached the company’s 50th anniversary.

In the mid-90s the company moved to its present location in Greenville on Stone Avenue, and Mims was replaced by Charles M. Timmons.

Since 2000, the company continues to be profitable, even with the many market challenges facing all businesses and insurance companies today.

Canal Insurance Company Motor Truck Cargo Coverage

Due to the market’s needs in this area, Canal has put together one of the broadest policies in the industry today.

There are two forms of insurance under this segment, preferred and standard forms.

While the standard form includes the removal of the Coinsurance Clause and the removal of Commodity Theft Limitation, this only scratches the surface of the preferred form Canal puts forth.

The preferred form includes areas of water damage, unattached trailers, reusable packing containers, debris removal, and various other types of coverage.

Canal Insurance Company Physical Damage Coverage

With the physical damage policy, both auto loan lease gap insurance coverage and a combined deductible if written at the same time with Canal’s motor truck cargo policy come standard.

The coverage provided to various classes and operations are offered in two ways:

  • Collision and comprehension
  • Collision with specific causalities of loss and combined additional coverage

An individual has a variety of deductible options, may increase his towing limits, add on non-owned trailer coverage, and also add on trailer interchange coverage to his present policy.
