Things to Remember...

  • In 2003 Atlantic Mutual was acquired by OneBeacon Insurance Group with subsidiaries covering most lines of personal and commercial insurance
  • This is true even though they carry most standard lines of consumer insurance including homeowners and automobile insurance coverage
  • The strength of OneBeacon has since enabled Atlantic Specialty to climb from a “B” rating to an “A.

Atlantic Specialty Insurance Fire & Casualty Company is a New York City-based property and casualty company originally established in 1986 under the name Atlantic Reinsurance Company.

As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company, Atlantic Specialty provided reinsurance for smaller companies specializing in commercial marine coverage.

The company ceased operations in 1993, but then reorganized under their new name and resumed business in 1995 as a standard property and casualty provider.

In 2003, Atlantic Mutual was acquired by OneBeacon Insurance Group, a Bermuda-based holding company with subsidiaries covering most lines of personal and commercial insurance.

Atlantic Specialty was part of that acquisition and now does business under the OneBeacon name.

As an OneBeacon subsidiary, Atlantic Specialty no longer maintains its own web presence or uses its own name for sales or branding purposes.

Atlantic Specialty Auto Insurance and OneBeacon Locations

Atlantic Specialty’s New York office is still listed as its primary address. However, their corporate headquarters are part of OneBeacon’s main U.S. office located in Minnesota.

We have listed below information regarding the Minnesota office; information for the New York office can be found at the top of this article.

OneBeacon U.S. Corporate Headquarters
601 Carlson Parkway, Suite 600
Minnetonka, MN 55305
Phone: (877) 434-3900

Information on the OneBeacon corporate website indicates that there may be some regional offices scattered around the country.

This information cannot be confirmed as the company does not provide detailed information about individual offices.

In all likelihood, any regional offices would be under the OneBeacon the name rather than Atlantic Specialty’s name.

Atlantic Specialty Auto Insurance and OneBeacon Agents

OneBeacon considers itself more of a specialty insurance company rather than a general provider.

This is true even though they carry most standard lines of consumer insurance including:

But since they tend to place more of a focus on their commercial and specialty products, you’re unlikely to find any local agents representing them for car insurance.

If you’re interested in an auto policy with them, you will probably have to contact them directly over the phone or through their website.

This direct-to-customer business model is not uncommon in the world of auto insurance.

Some auto insurance companies prefer to do business this way rather than using independent agents because it gives them direct contact with their customers.

It may not be as convenient for customers, but in today’s technology-minded world personal relationships with local agents are no longer a necessity.

Atlantic Specialty Auto Insurance and OneBeacon Claims

Atlantic Specialty and OneBeacon have their business lines divided into 13 separate categories.

Each one has its own designated claims service, including telephone number and contact person. You’ll find a complete listing of the various claims representatives on the OneBeacon corporate website.

There doesn’t appear to be any way to initiate a claim through an online form, as some other major insurance carriers provide.

OneBeacon encourages customers to contact them as soon as possible when initiating an auto insurance claim.

Doing so helps both the company and their customers facilitate a more efficient claims process which can then be settled as quickly as possible. Slow reporting of claims only makes the process equally slow.

To that end, their website provides a document titled “Commercial Auto Claim Checklist” designed to help auto insurance customers file their claims properly.

The document is freely downloadable from their website in PDF format. In addition, the company also offers a few other documents pertaining to specific states or specific claims questions.

Atlantic Specialty Auto Insurance and OneBeacon Financial Ratings

As listed at the top of this article, OneBeacon enjoys an “A” rating from AM Best.

When they first purchased Atlantic Mutual and Atlantic Specialty back in 2003, AM Best published a report saying they would reaffirm OneBeacon’s rating despite the shaky history of the two companies they were purchasing.

They also promised a review of Atlantic Specialty’s rating in the wake of the acquisition. The strength of OneBeacon has since enabled Atlantic Specialty to climb from a “B” rating to an “A.“.

Atlantic Specialty’s last financial reporting also indicates the company is on good financial ground.

They reported total assets of $66.1 million, a policy surplus of just under $41 million, and $9 million in working capital.
