Things to remember...

  • If you offer rides to Curb users in your personal vehicle, you must check the terms of your auto insurance policy first
  • Curb requires you to own a taxi, sedan, or other for-hire vehicle and possess a valid ID to become a driver
  • The Driver Services Agreement says that you must carry at least the coverage required on for-hire vehicles in your area
  • You must provide a copy of your insurance information through the app and it will be supplied to riders when requested
  • Many personal auto policies will exclude coverage when you’re driving for-hire because it violates the terms of your policy

Curb is known as The Taxi App. Unlike other ride-sharing apps, Curb gives users access to transportation from 50,000 different taxi cab drivers and 100,000 different for-hire drivers using their own vehicles.

The advanced mobile app connects taxi drivers to active riders who are hailing rides from real-life taxis in real-time.

If you’re going to apply to become a driver through Curb as a part-time gig or to earn a regular full-time income, it’s crucial that you look into insurance requirements first.

Not only do you have to satisfy the requirements through Curb and Verifone, but you also have to verify that your existing insurer will cover claims if you get into an accident.

What are the requirements to become a Curb driver?

One of the things that set Curb apart from other companies is that the company will only accept job requests from licensed and insured taxi drivers. With other ride-sharing companies, anyone with their driver’s license and a reliable car can accept those who are hailing rides.

Many people feel safer using curb because the drivers have gone through a more rigorous licensing process.

If you would like to become a Curb driver, you will need to possess a taxi driver’s license in the state you’re signing up in. In addition to your special license, you will need the following:

  • a cab
  • a sedan
  • a for-hire vehicle

As long as Curb is in need of new drivers in the city you’re applying to drive in and you have sufficient insurance, you’ll be approved to download the driver version of the app.

How do you become a licensed taxi driver?

It is a much more involved process to get your taxi driver’s license than it is to apply for a standard license to operate private passenger vehicles. Since the process is more rigorous, passengers feel safer at the hands of a taxi driver when they are in need of transportation.

If you’re not yet a licensed taxi driver, you will need to complete a process that typically takes 12 weeks. While the rules vary from state to state, they are generally similar. Here are some of the most common requirements that you must meet before you consider applying:

  • You must have held a Class B license (for personal vehicles) for at least three years before applying for this special license
  • You must have a good driving record to meet good repute requirements with the Department
  • You must meet all medical requirements
  • You must pass a criminal background check
  • You must pass a taxi driver licensing exam

Are you required to carry auto insurance when you drive for a Curb?

If you’re approved to drive for Curb, you are basically saying that you agree to the Driver Services Agreement before you take your first fare. Part of the Driver Services Agreement is dedicated specifically to insurance.

According to your contract, you agree that any vehicle that you use will be covered by at least third-party liability insurance.

There’s not a specific requirement set by Curb within the Driver Services Agreement.

The contract says that you must have a valid automobile liability insurance policy that provides protection when you’re in a loss that involved third-party bodily injury or property damage.

The levels of insurance that are required are dependent on what limits of liability the state requires taxi drivers to operate vehicles-for-hire.

While states do have mandatory insurance requirements for personal drivers, the limits that are required under state law are typically very low. Some states require as little as $15,000 in Bodily Injury coverage.

Since cab drivers have others in their vehicle, they are held to a higher standard and must carry more coverage. The passengers must have coverage to lean on and other drivers on the road need to have protection also.

The standard federal insurance requirements on for-hire vehicles include:

Can you raise your liability limits on your existing personal insurance policy?

As you can see, the insurance requirements for taxi drivers are much higher than those of standard drivers. This is what gives many Curb users peace of mind when using the app.

If you currently have a personal auto insurance policy, there’s a strong chance that your insurance will not pay if you have a claim. There are a few reasons for this.

Reasons that Personal Insurance Won’t Pay

You don’t want to find out that your personal insurance won’t pay while you’re driving for Curb after you’ve already had a loss. It’s best that you call your agent and ask about your limits of liability and exclusions before ever signing up for any type of ride-sharing service.

One of the main reasons that you won’t have any coverage while driving for-hire is because you’re classified as a commercial driver when you have a taxi driver license.

Since you have a special type of commercial license, you need a special type of commercial insurance that will satisfy the federal and state insurance requirements for for-hire drivers.

If you naively believe that your personal insurance will pay for your claims presented while earning a fare, think again.

Even if you could by $1.5 million or more in liability insurance through your provider, any claims presented when you’re transporting passengers for-hire are denied. For-hire and livery services are excluded under all standard personal auto contracts.

What type of insurance do you need?

If you do drive for Curb, you need to protect yourself at every corner. It is your duty to provide proof of insurance to the company and to maintain the insurance all throughout your contract even if the status is not verified.

If you don’t have adequate coverage, you will be expected to cover the damages out of your own pocket.

Typically, taxi drivers need commercial auto insurance to ensure they have protection. This type of insurance expressly covers for-hire drivers from all of the different hazards they might face.

While the coverage is more expensive than personal insurance, it’s worth it to have the right protection before anything happens.
