FR-44 Auto Insurance

FR-44 auto insurance is a type of certificate that proves a DUI-convicted driver has auto insurance. An FR-44 car insurance certificate shows that the high-risk driver has shown financial responsibility in accordance with state law. FR-44 auto insurance laws are common in Florida and Virginia. FR-44 auto insurance costs $15 to $25 to file, depending on your age. Since FR-44 insurance isn't an actual auto insurance policy, you'll need to compare multiple companies and shop around to find high-risk driver auto insurance.

FR-44 auto insurance is Florida’s and Virginia’s answer to drivers who’ve been convicted of DUI/DWI. The FR-44 insurance program lets the state know that the convicted driver has high-risk auto insurance with a company in the local area.

How much is the FR-44 auto insurance fee?

The FR-44 insurance fee cost between $15 to $25. Once you have an FR-44 certificate, you’ll be able to keep it as long as you’re insured. Any gaps in auto insurance will require you to sign up for FR-44 car insurance certification again.

Therefore, you’ll need to buy FR-44 auto insurance before the auto insurance provider gives you a non-standard policy.

Speaking of non-standard, you’ll notice that the minimum required limits for FR-44 insurance is twice as much as the minimum state requirements in Florida and Virginia. Let’s look at the coverage limits for FR-44 insurance recipients.

According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the minimum requirements for auto insurance in Florida is $10,000 for bodily injury of one person per accident, $20,000 for bodily injury of multiple people per accident, and $10,000 for property damage per accident.

What’s the difference between FR-44 and SR-22 auto insurance?

FR-44 and SR-22 are designed to give auto insurance to high-risk drivers. However, the SR-22 insurance program demands less on the driver’s coverage limits.

For example, Virginia’s SR-22 coverage limits for bodily injury is $25,000 for one person per accident. Under FR-44, however, the coverage limits are $50,000 for one person per accident, according to the Virginia DMV.

There are more differences, which we’ve clarified below. Take a look.

There’s not much difference in FR-44 and SR-22 certification. FR-44 leans more toward drivers convicted of DUI, while SR-22 targets drivers who are convicted of general driving violations. You may be able to get cheap SR-22 auto insurance if you search hard enough.

How do you get FR-44 auto insurance without a vehicle?

If you don’t own a vehicle but still need car insurance, you can enroll in non-owner car insurance. This could meet the FR-44 insurance requirement; however, you may have to file an FR-44 form with the state anyway.

Most auto insurance companies will file for you and alert the state that you’re insured, but you’ll pay higher premiums for non-owner auto insurance. Also, it helps the driver remain insured until their insurance history improves.

Non-owner auto insurance has liability-only perks that pay for injuries and property damage of the other party when you’re at fault in an accident.

FR-44 Auto Insurance: The Bottom Line

If you live outside Florida and Virginia, you don’t have to worry about FR-44 insurance certification. If your driver’s license is suspended, don’t drive your vehicle until your driver’s license is reinstated.

However, drivers in Florida and Virginia may have to enroll in FR-44 if you have a history of driving recklessly, driving while revoked, or driving under the influence that causes injury.
