Things to remember...

  • Air conditioning malfunctions due to wear and tear won’t be covered by insurance policies or most warranties
  • Air conditioner damage derived from accidents or associated with losses provisioned in comprehensive insurance may be covered
  • Take care of the air conditioning system to prevent wear and tear

Heat waves may be uncommon occurrences in certain states, but they do happen.

Driving in a hot car is not an enjoyable experience. At least the air conditioner is there to help with the heat and humidity. Unfortunately, sometimes you may find that your air conditioner is not working.

An air conditioner is a mechanical component of the vehicle. As is the case with all mechanical parts, an air conditioner might fail. Driving won’t be all that enjoyable when the air conditioner dies.

No one wants to pay for costly repairs. Attention usually turns to insurance providers for a solution.

Would damage to an air condition be covered under an insurance policy?

What about the warranty?

New cars generally come with warranties. Even used cars might be afforded dealer warranties. Purchasing third-party extended warranties is an option exercised by many careful car owners.

When certain parts in a car fail unexpectedly and outside the heading of an accident or negligence, a warranty might cover the loss. So, there would be no need to even file an insurance claim.

No insurance claim means no report made on the loss history which will help your premiums stay low (learn more here: no claim bonus car insurance.) Losses and claims can — and do — lead to increases in insurance premiums.

One type of coverage, however, could potentially act as an alternative to a warranty.

A Unique Insurance Claim

Mechanical breakdown insurance is a coverage option commonly made available to those who buy a new car.

Not every driver finds mechanical breakdown worth purchasing since the coverage works in a manner similar to a warranty or extended warranty, although mechanical breakdown insurance may cover repairs outside the scope of a warranty.

Certain rules are in place with mechanical breakdown insurance.

Wear and tear, for example, are both well outside the scope of what would be covered.

Manufacturer defects or other similar problems with a part would likely be covered.

Warranties and mechanical breakdown insurance, however, are not the only reimbursement options available to those experiencing air conditioner troubles.

 The Comprehensive Claim

The air conditioning system may be destroyed from damage inflicted by a covered loss found in comprehensive insurance. If a fire were to destroy the air conditioner, then the loss could very well be covered under a comprehensive claim.

In general, comprehensive insurance provides financial protection against losses derived outside of collisions and accidents such as the following:

  • fires
  • floods
  • vandalism
  • thievery

Comprehensive insurance is sort of a “forgotten insurance” that people do not think about until the time comes to file a claim.

Most associate auto insurance with accident-related claims. Good reasons exist for thinking about problems and issues related to accidents.

However, the harm befalling a vehicle is not limited to at-fault or no-fault collisions. Harm may very well include certain instances of damage to the vehicle’s air conditioner.

Accidents and Claims

Accidents inflict unexpected damage on a vehicle. A crushed fender, devastated suspension, or seriously harmed engine are among the expected, albeit unwanted, problems arising from an accident.

After a vehicle is involved in an accident, only a mechanic is capable of assessing the actual damage that occurred. Possibly, the air conditioning system might have suffered damage.

Since the damage resulted from an accident, filing a claim and acquiring a settlement are possible. Three common types of insurance coverage are usually tapped to pay for accident-related vehicle damage:

  • Liability
  • Collision
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist

Auto liability claims are filed against the at-fault driver who caused an accident. With collision and uninsured/underinsured motorist claims, the injured party files a claim with his/her own insurance company.

Both collision and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage come with deductibles possibly ranging from $500 to $2,000, which means the actual insurance coverage may not kick in when minimal damage has occurred.

The same is true of comprehensive insurance as well.

Adding various different coverage options and choosing a good deductible are rooted in proper comparison shopping.

Requesting four or more quotes and reviewing the quotes very judiciously makes it possible to protect a vehicle from losses and do so at a reasonable premium price.

Wear and Tear Warnings

Most air conditioner problems are associated with normal wear and tear. The likely outcome of a warranty or insurance claim on any part damaged by wear and tear is a denial. Insurance companies and warranty providers do not pay for things excluded from coverage.

Wear and tear is often a cumulative process. Damage and degradation occur slowly over time until things get very bad.

Be on the lookout for any issues with an air conditioner. The second a malfunction arises, take the vehicle to a garage to be checked out.

Hopefully, the trouble can be addressed before worsening.

Hopefully, when the damage comes from an accident, mishap, or another incident, the insurance company will step in to cover the loss. Searching for and purchasing the best insurance policy enhances the ability to get that much-needed best coverage.
