Things to remember...

  • Purchasing and maintaining an active car insurance policy is a requirement in almost every state
  • However, there are some situations where obtaining coverage may not be as easy as you had expected
  • For instance, drivers with a poor driving record or insurance history may find themselves struggling to get coverage through a traditional provider
  • Additionally, certain specialty cars may not qualify for a traditional auto insurance policy, making it more difficult to locate coverage

When it comes time to purchase insurance coverage, many people just shop around and choose a policy quote from a provider they identify with and provides them with the best rates.

However, this may not work in some circumstances, which may make obtaining car insurance more difficult.

If you cannot get car insurance, it’s important to understand what is keeping you from being successful in your search. Once you know your risk factors, you can choose the best option to meet your needs.

What is keeping you from being able to obtain coverage?

In almost every state in the United States, there are compulsory auto insurance laws that require drivers to purchase and maintain minimum levels of coverage.

Most drivers will have to get a policy through a traditional insurance provider that carries the minimum limits as determined by their state.

However, there are cases where a traditional provider may be unwilling to provide you with coverage.

One of the most common reasons that an insurance provider may be hesitant to provide you with coverage is due to your previous history.

Your driving record and your insurance history are two key factors that are looked at before your policy is completed by the insurance provider.

Your driving record is a history of the following:

  • Your previous moving violations
  • Traffic citations
  • Other ticketed offenses that have occurred

If your driving record shows a pattern of multiple offenses or more serious offenses, then a traditional insurance provider may determine that you are a higher risk than they are willing to accept.

Your insurance history is a record of your previous insurance claims, accidents, and relationships with other insurance carriers. If this record is lacking a lot of information or history, an insurance carrier may want to see more history from you before insuring you.

Also, a high number of claims or failing to pay your insurance premiums may be another red flag that you are a higher risk individual.

If you own a unique or special vehicle, such as a high-performance car or an exotic, imported car, then a traditional insurance carrier may not be able to meet the coverage needs of such a car.

In this scenario, they may be unable to provide you with coverage simply because they are not designed to handle the unique risks that your vehicle faces on a daily basis.

Another factor that could make it harder to obtain coverage is your living situation.

If you live in an area that has a high number of vehicle vandalism or theft claims, insurance carriers may consider that area too much of a risk, which can make it more difficult for you to obtain coverage.

What are your options for coverage?

When you have tried and are unable to obtain insurance coverage through a traditional policy, there are still options available to you that you may not have realized.

Two of the most common options are joining a state assigned risk pool or getting a specialized policy from a private insurance provider that deals with high-risk drivers.

If you decide to join a state assigned risk pool, you will not be given a choice about which insurance carrier you are assigned to.

These risk pools work by assigning higher risk policies to every insurance provider that operates in the state, normally based on the percentage of business they do within the state.

These insurance companies will have to provide you with coverage, but this policy will normally come at a much higher price than a traditional policy.

If you choose to look at private insurance companies, you may end up with better premium costs than other high-risk options. These insurance providers often specialize in providing coverage to drivers in the following situations:

  • having poor driving records
  • having several accidents
  • owning specialty or unique cars
  • living in high-risk locations

You may also find that high-risk insurance companies can still provide coverage options than a state assigned risk pool can offer.

If you have questions about how to join a state assigned risk pool or where you can find a high-risk insurance company, contact your state’s Department of Insurance.

They will be able to provide you with additional information about your options as well as contact information for the provider.

How can you reduce your risk and get a traditional policy?

There are a few factors that you can influence to make yourself more appealing to traditional insurance providers; making changes can help to balance the factors that you are unable to control.

One of the hardest factors to adjust is your driving record and insurance history.

While you can continue to make positive efforts to maintain a good driving record and insurance history going forward, your past will continue to follow you for several years.

Every insurance provider looks at your previous records a little differently, so it may be beneficial to speak to some of your potential providers about what they specifically look at when quoting your policy.

Once you’ve got an idea of what factors are looked at in your area, maintaining a positive insurance history and a clean driving record can be beneficial in the long run.

This will make you look more appealing to future insurance providers while helping to reduce premium costs as well.

Another factor you have control over is where you live and where you garage your vehicle. In some areas, the cost of damages related to theft and vandalism are so high that insurance companies are unwilling to cover vehicles located in that area.

If this is the case with you, you may want to look at what options you have regarding your living situation and where you can garage your vehicle.

If you use a secured garage, your provider may be willing to lower premium costs to compensate for your additional precaution.

If you own a unique or specialty vehicle, one way to make yourself more appealing to traditional insurance companies is to own a more traditional, daily use vehicle. This car can be a more sensible vehicle that serves as your primary or commuter car.

Your insurance carrier may be able to provide insurance to a unique vehicle that is only be used once a month compared to once a day, for instance.

There are a few factors that you cannot influence as easily, such as:

  • Your age
  • Your gender
  • The length of time that you’ve carried insurance coverage

These are all factors that your insurance carrier will still look at, but you will be forced to accept their decision on these factors regardless of what choices you make.

As you continue to carry coverage and grow older, insurance companies will look at you as a lower risk due to your increased experience and increased insurance history; making it easier to obtain traditional coverage.

If you cannot get coverage through a traditional insurance provider, there are still a few options available to you.

States often utilize a state assigned risk pool, which requires insurance providers to provide coverage to drivers that they would not normally insure; often at a higher premium cost. There are also private insurance companies that specialize in the high-risk coverage business.

While looking for coverage through one of these options, investigate what makes it so difficult for you to obtain coverage, then take steps to improve these factors.

If you appear to be high-risk for some reason, make positive efforts to change these factors; doing so can make you more appealing to future insurance providers when you look at purchasing a more traditional insurance policy.
