Chrysler Vehicle Types

The Chrysler website showcases four of the newer vehicles available from the company. Each vehicle comes with several style options and its top claim to fame, the website notes.

The Chrysler 200 ranks high in safety tests, while the Chrysler 200 convertible offers the most legroom available in convertibles. The Chrysler 300 boasts being the most technologically advanced in its class.

The Town & Country minivan takes honors for offering a number of standard features that are not standard for competing minivans.

These include fuel economizer mode, a hands-free communication system, a roof rack, power liftgate, storage areas beneath the seats, and single-screen DVD.

Chrysler makes other vehicles that are part of its family, according to the Chrysler Group LLC website.

These include:

  • Dodge
  • Ram
  • Jeep
  • Fiat
  • Mopar
  • SRT vehicles

Some of the better-known vehicles that are part of the group are the Dodge Dart, the Ram 1500, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Fiat 500, and SRT8.

Types range from the two-door convertible to the full-size pickup.

How Vehicle Type Plays a Part in Insurance Costs

The type of vehicle you drive plays a role in the overall cost of your auto insurance, according to the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

The overriding general rule says expensive vehicles typically have more expensive insurance than lower-cost cars.

You may also end up paying more for car insurance if you opt for a vehicle type that is frequently stolen or expensive to repair. Going for a sports car or high-performance vehicle, such as the Chrysler convertible, can also boost insurance.

Statistics usually show sports and high-performance cars are involved in more accidents than other vehicle types. Stats also show they are costlier to repair and more frequently stolen.

Two insurance types relate directly to the cost of vehicle repair and replacement. These are collision and comprehensive insurance, which is where you would see the increased price based on vehicle type.

Chrysler Safety

The Chrysler Group LLC boasts a twofold safety and security approach, according to its website. The company uses passive safety devices as well as active safety and crash-prevention features.

The group says 11 of its vehicles received Top Safety Pick honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2011.

The Chrysler 300, Chrysler 200, and Town & County merited honors.

They include:

  • Dodge Avenger
  • Dodge Charger
  • Dodge Durango
  • Dodge Grand Caravan
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Jeep Patriot
  • FIAT 500.

Older Chrysler models may not have the same advanced safety features and technology enjoyed by its newer vehicles.

Some standard safety equipment that can still help lower auto insurance rates is anti-lock brakes and standard airbags.

How Safety Plays a Part in Insurance Costs

Driving a vehicle that has airbags, automatic seatbelts and other safety devices often net a discount when it comes to buying auto insurance, the Illinois Department of Insurance notes.

Safety devices are meant to deter accidents and lessen the severity of injuries, both of which save the insurance company money when it comes to claims.

Many companies thus pass the savings on to you by encouraging and rewarding safety devices in the form of a discount.

Chrysler Thefts

Chrysler pays attention to theft prevention with a few advanced devices, although two of its vehicles still made the most stolen list for 2010.

Every year the National Insurance Crime Bureau lists the top 10 vehicles that were stolen, and Chrysler clocked in at numbers six and seven.

The sixth most stolen vehicle for 2010 was the 2004 Dodge Ram, followed by the 2000 Dodge Caravan at number seven.

Although two Chrysler vehicles made the list, the company still offers security measures such as an engine immobilizer.

Other theft protection may come in the form of a car alarm that activates during an attempted break-in or start-up without the vehicle key.

How Car Theft Plays a Part in Insurance Costs

Security devices that deter theft join safety devices as one of the common reasons car insurance companies offer discounts.

The same reasoning applies, with the cost savings not having to replace a vehicle passed along to you if you incorporate security devices.

As noted earlier, high-performance vehicles and sports cars are generally prime targets for thieves and may merit even more protection than the average car or truck.

Two types of security devices that may be eligible for discounts are theft prevention, such as car alarms, and tracking devices that help you recover your vehicle after it’s stolen.

Chrysler Technology

The Chrysler Group LLC prides itself on its use of technology and engineering innovation. Its website even mentions a whole list of firsts that were originally introduced in Chrysler vehicles over the years.

These include:

  • Automatic overdrive in 1934
  • Safety rim wheels in 1941
  • Power steering and windows in the 1950s
  • Four-wheel drive with automatic transmission in 1963
  • Airbags as a standard device in 1988

Company innovation continues with a number of high-tech features available in newer models.

A system called Uconnect lets drivers hook their personal media and communication devices to the vehicle’s electronic system while it also helps them understand how to operate various vehicle features.

Highlights of the system include rear-seat music options, voice commands to make phone calls and change radio stations, touchscreen controls, advanced steering wheel controls, WiFi for the car, and high-tech navigation systems.

How Technology Plays a Part in Insurance Costs

High-tech features are not typically on the list of devices that can lower your insurance costs, although some may make your driving safer and more secure.

Devices like the advanced steering wheel controls and hands-free communication systems, for instance, could cut down on accidents caused by losing control of the vehicle or fumbling to dial a cell phone.

High-tech audio and entertainment systems may be too alluring to leave alone while on the road, especially for teens and young adults.

Rather than helping to cut down on accidents, they may be wont to cause them.

Insurance costs may also go up if you opt to insure any high-tech devices beyond what is included in the basic coverage.

Insurance companies often offer insurance options for particularly expensive stereo and other electronic equipment.

Other Ways to Keep Your Chrysler Auto Insurance Costs Low

The Illinois DOI offers several other tips for keeping your auto insurance rates on the lowest end of the spectrum. Many car insurance companies offer discounts for various factors.

Safety and security devices were already noted as ways to obtain discounts, and you have other options as well.

Your driving record can also play a part in discounts. It is also one of the top factors insurance companies look at when setting your rates in the first place.

Companies look at your history of accidents, claims, and violations, especially moving violations for speeding and other infractions.

A few more tips for reducing your car insurance premium can keep your rates low.

The Illinois DOI recommends opting for the highest deductible you can afford, which will keep the premiums at their lowest.

Paying attention to the type of insurance coverage you purchase is another way to save money.

While you’ll want to get basic coverage required by your state’s laws, all other coverage is optional.

Lower coverage limits also result in lower premiums. You may even save a few bucks by paying your car insurance premium annually in one lump sum instead of spreading it out into monthly installments.
