Today, we’ll walk you through how Travelers is being rated by organizations like the Better Business Bureau, A.M. Best, J.D. Power, and more. And, we’re doing much more than just leaving you with a rating — we’re explaining what each one means, and why that matters to you.

– AM Best Ratings
For AM Best, it is all about financial stability.
Operating since the late 1800s, AM Best provides ratings and financial data exclusive to the insurance industry.
In fact, AM Best has issued ratings for more than 3,500 companies in 90 countries, all meant to assist both industry leaders and consumers in assessing “an insurer’s financial strength, creditworthiness, and ability to honor obligations to policyholders worldwide.”
AM Best assigns ratings ranging from an A++ to a D. The good news for Travelers?
The company has received AM Best’s highest possible ranking of an A++, also known as “Superior.”
In a nutshell, that means AM Best believes Travelers has the “ability to honor obligations to policyholders worldwide.” It’s good news for any consumer, as it allows drivers to place more confidence in the company’s financial stability.
– Better Business Bureau Ratings
As for the Better Business Bureau (BBB), the nonprofit issues ratings as a way of providing consumers with insight into how a particular business interacts with its customers. BBB grades are based upon a number of factors, including:
- Business’s complaint history with BBB
- Type of business
- Time in business
- Transparent Business Practices
- Failure to honor commitments to BBB
- Licensing and government actions that are known to BBB
The BBB uses a 100-point scale to come up with letter grades, with an A+ being the highest, and an F being the lowest. So where does Travelers measure up?
The company currently as an A+, the BBB’s highest rating. To earn an A+, Travelers had to score at least 97 points out of 100.
But we should also point out that in spite of its superior rating, Travelers has registered an average customer review of 1.5 out of 5 stars (out of about 60 reviews). If it seems odd that Travelers can still have an A+ rating in light of these negative reviews, keep in mind — complaints are just one of 13 factors used to determine a grade.
– Moody’s Ratings
In the same way lenders will look to your credit score as an indicator of risk, financial experts do the same for insurance companies.
Moody’s rankings range from Aaa (the highest quality) to C (the lowest quality). Right now, Travelers Insurance has an “Aa2” designation, which the company points to as Moody’s 3rd highest ranking out of 21 possible designations. To have a grade falling in this category means that Travelers is “judged to be of high quality” and “subject to very low credit risk.”
– S&P Ratings
Like Moody’s, S&P is considered one of the world’s “Big Three” credit-rating agencies. In their own words:
S&P Ratings “express an opinion about the ability and willingness of an entity to fully meet its financial obligations, and on time.”
S&P Ratings range from an AAA at its highest, to a D as its lowest. S&P has assigned Travelers with an investment grade of “AA,” which means Travelers has a “very high capacity to meet financial commitments.”
– NAIC Complaint Index
As much as we all want to hear about a company’s financial standing, let’s be honest — drivers also want to hear the other side of the story. And by that, we mean complaints. How many people are filing complaints with Travelers, and how do their rates compare with the national average?
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) hosts a database in which consumers can review the three-year complaint trend for an insurance company.
Keep in mind this data is from closed, confirmed consumer complaints provided to the NAIC by state insurance departments. We took a look at Travelers’ complaint history, and here’s what we found:

In looking at data from 2016 to 2018, we can see that Travelers Indemnity consistently registered Complaint Indexes higher than the National Complaint Index — going from 1.98 in 2016 to 6.37 in 2018. However —
- It’s important to keep in mind that the actual number of complaints filed against the company in the private passenger auto category is very low, with four complaints filed in both 2016 and 2018, and five complaints filed in 2018.
- It’s also important to note that the number of complaints is low in proportion to the number of Travelers policies written.
Knowing this certainly helps shed important perspective on these figures.
– J.D. Power Ratings
With these next set of ratings, we’re going straight to the consumers.
J.D. Power prides itself in using ratings generated from real customers, and real experts.
The J.D. Power 2019 U.S. Auto Insurance Study ranks auto-insurance companies by region and measures customer satisfaction in five areas (in order of importance): interaction, policy offerings, price, billing process and policy information, and claims.
In addition to measuring customer satisfaction, J.D. Power also assigns each insurer with a “Power Circle Rating,” These ratings are measured in (you guessed it) circles, and can be interpreted as follows:
- “Among the Best’ (five out of five circles)
- “Better than Most” (four out of five circles)
- “About Average” (three out of five circles), and
- “The Rest” (two out of five circles).
There is no power circle ranking with one or zero circles.
We looked at how Travelers Insurance performed in each J.D. Power region in both customer satisfaction, and in Power Circle ratings:

Of the 11 regions listed, ratings for Travelers could be found in eight. Of those, Travelers received a Power Circle Rating of “The Rest” in six regions. This means in communicating with “verified product and service owners” in those regions, Travelers scored in the lowest 20 percent.
Travelers, however, did see better results elsewhere. In the New York region, Travelers received a “Better than Most Distinction,” and received its highest marks in the Central Region with “About Average.”
– Consumer Reports Ratings
With Consumer Reports, we see customers paint a much different from that of the J.D. Power Auto Insurance Study.
Here, Travelers’ customers are rating how well the company handles the day-to-day interactions that important to drivers like you. For instance, how easy is it to reach an agent? Are those agents courteous? And, how well does Travelers keep drivers informed of the claims process?

We can see that these Travelers customers were very satisfied across the board, giving the company “Very Good” and “Excellent” ratings throughout. It should also be noted that the overall Reader Score for Travelers is 90, which is on the high end of the scale.
The origins of Travelers Insurance can be traced all the way back to 1864 with a “two-cent premium” — an estimate given by company founder James G. Batterson to a local banker.
At the time, Batterson had been working to organize a company to introduce accident insurance to the United States. From its founding in 1864, the company has since grown to “The Travelers Companies, Inc.” with areas of focus that include property and casualty, personal, business, and specialty insurance.
Aside from knowing about Travelers’ history as a company, many are interested in knowing where Travelers stands now. Case in point: the company’s market share. Is Travelers’ market share of the insurance industry growing, decreasing, or remaining stagnant? Keep reading to find out:
We did the research, and got answers.
First, let’s define market share. According to Investopedia,
“Market share represents the percentage of an industry, or a market’s total sales, that is earned by a particular company over a specified time period.”
We looked to the NAIC to see what Travelers’ market share looked like from 2015 to 2018, according to the number of direct premiums written. What we saw was a story of continued growth:
- Travelers’ market share has increased steadily, rising from 1.69 percent in 2015 to 1.9 percent in 2017. Its market share remained at 1.9 percent in 2018.
- If those numbers seem low to you, keep this in mind: in 2018, Travelers had the 9th highest market share of all car insurance companies in the U.S., coming behind other companies like State Farm, Geico, and Progressive.

Bottom line? Where some companies choose to use humor or more “flashy” marketing techniques, Travelers hits a “sweet spot” with emotional, yet relatable commercials.
– Community Service
More than $218 million dollars — it’s what Travelers Chairman and CEO Alan Schnitzer says the company has invested in important causes over the last decade. On top of that, he says employees have additionally logged well over 250,000 volunteer hours in just two years.
So, what exactly is Travelers investing in? Among their areas of interest are:
- Academic and Career Success (focusing on low-income and minority students in grades five through 12, students in college, and students seeking careers in the insurance industry)
- Thriving Neighborhoods (supporting economic development and community programs that help families live safely, find employment, and better prepare for natural disasters)

– How is Travelers Insurance Positioned for the Future?
All in all, Travelers Insurance has a lot of important positives working in its favor:
- Strong ratings in the financial sector, receiving some of the highest ratings from AM Best, S&P and Moody’s.
- Travelers continues to show progress in its market share growth, with consistent increases from 2015 to 2017 and holding steady in 2018. Remember, in 2018, Travelers had the 9th highest market share among all car insurance providers in the U.S.
- Travelers allows customers to access a variety of services online, including bill payments and printing your ID cards.
- Consumer Reports gave Travellers stellar ratings across the board in how agents relate with customers.
What may be of some concern is the customer feedback received through the J.D. Power Ratings, as many regions gave Travelers two out of five circles, also known as “The Rest.” We also noticed that in spite of an A+ rating with the BBB, customer reviews were predominantly negative.
Though it is always possible that the samplings used in both cases don’t represent the whole, perhaps Travelers needs to make greater strides in improving its customer relations.
– Employee Feedback
Could employee culture have an effect on your insurance?
We believe that it certainly could be impactful, and it never hurts to hear that a company’s employees are happy. We wanted to dig deeper and see what employees have to say about Travelers Insurance. Here’s what we found:
- At Glassdoor.com, the average employee review for Travelers is 3.9 out of 5 stars, with 76% recommending Travelers to a friend. In fact, employee reviews have led to Travelers being named to Glassdoor’s “Best Places to Work” list four times: in 2019 (#70), 2018 (#80), 2011 (#31), and 2010 (#39)
- At Payscale.com, the rating was slightly lower at 3.7 out of 5 stars in overall satisfaction. Travelers received its highest rankings for Company Outlook (4.2 out of 5), followed by top rankings in Manager Communication, Learning and Development, and Manager Relationship. On the flip side, Travelers received its lowest scores in categories tied to pay.
Though it can be difficult to make assessments based upon these ratings, it appears Travelers is gaining more positive feedback than negative from its employees.

The first thing you’ll need to know is whether Travelers car insurance is available to purchase in your state. As of now, drivers with Travelers can purchase car insurance policies in 42 states, and in Washington, D.C. States where Travelers car insurance is not available are:

We took a look at the average rates Travelers customers across the country are paying. While data was not available in each state, here’s what we found:
For those wondering which state is averaging the highest rates, and which state is averaging the lowest rates, we have your answer:
- According to our data, Pennsylvania residents are paying the highest average rates, at $7,842.47 a year. While Rhode Island residents aren’t paying over $7,000, they’re close at just over $6,900. Following Rhode Island are Kentucky and Connecticut, at estimated average rates of $6,551.68 and $6,004.29
- Maine residents are paying the lowest average rates at $2,252.97. Next on the list are Illinois ($2,499.76), Tennessee ($2,738.76) and Oregon ($2.892.19)
– Comparing Rates of the Top 10 Companies
We compared Travelers’ average rates to those of the largest car insurers in the country:
In looking at the data, we quickly found that the average rate for Travelers customers is the 3rd highest among the nation’s top 10 providers, at $4,434.91. Travelers was only surpassed by Liberty Mutual (which averaged just over $6,000) and Allstate (which was closer to Travelers, at nearly $4,900).
– Travelers Male vs. Female Rates
Most tend to believe that men, especially young men, pay higher car insurance premiums than women. However, some studies have proven otherwise, showing that there are instances where women do pay more than their male counterparts.
So, the question becomes, what about Travelers insurance customers? Who’s paying more — men, or women? Take a look:

Our data focuses on married 60-year-olds and 35-year-olds, and single 25-year-olds and 17-year-olds. And no matter what age or demographic group we looked at, we saw one consistency with Travelers drivers — women paying less than men!
For the most part, the differences in each subgroup were fairly minimal, with one glaring exception — 17-year-old drivers. The difference between the two is well over $3,000, with 17-year-old men being insured at an average $12,850.91, and their female counterparts being insured at $9,307.32

– Average Travelers Rates by Make and Model
What about your car? Can its make and model have bearing on your premium? According to the Insurance Information Institute, the answer is yes:
“The cost of your car is a major factor in the cost to insure it. Other variables include the likelihood of theft, the cost of repairs, its engine size and the overall safety record of the car. Automobiles with high quality safety equipment might qualify for premium discounts.”
We compared Travelers’ rates among six popular vehicles — two Ford F-150s, two Toyota RAV4s, and two Honda Civics from the years 2015 and 2018 — and here’s what we found:

In summary, we didn’t find a great amount of variation, but did notice that the car with the highest average premium on this list was the 2018 Toyota RAV4: XLE (just over $4,700), and the car with the lowest average premium was the 2015 Ford F-150 (right around $4,000).
– Average Travelers Rates by Commute
Question: For Travelers drivers, what’s the financial difference between a 10-mile daily commute, and a 25-mile daily commute?

The fact that a higher amount of coverage will result in a higher premium shouldn’t be surprising. But the real question for Travelers insurance customers is, by how much?

When it comes to how your credit score affects your car insurance premiums, having a poor score can be costly.
If you want a better idea of what constitutes a good credit score, or a poor credit score, take a look at these stats from Experian:

- Very Good: 740-799
- Good: 670-739
- Fair: 580-669
- Very Poor: 300-579
Experian also goes on to report that the average credit score for Americans is 675, which falls in the “good range.”
We looked into what Travelers customers with Good, Fair and Poor credit are paying:

- Travelers customers with poor credit are paying over $1,100 more in premiums than those with good credit, and just over $800 more than those with fair credit.
- Finally, those with fair credit are paying about $285 more than those with good credit.
– Average Travelers Rates by Driving Record
Finally, we’re looking at how driving record impacts rates for Travelers customers.
Don’t be mistaken — your record can have a significant impact on what you pay in premiums. Here’s how it breaks down for those with Travelers:

Here, we can immediately see that drivers with a DUI will pay the highest price — $5,741.40, to be exact. That figure is nearly $2,300 more than what a driver with a clean record will pay.

– What Stands Out and What’s Missing
What stands out as discounts with a high return are the Safe Driver discount (up to 23 percent) as well as the company’s driving device app, also known as IntelliDrive.
This is a program in which drivers allow Travelers to capture and score their driver behavior through an app. Discounted rates and availability for IntelliDrive vary by state, so be sure to speak to your agent.
While Travelers certainly offers a wide variety of discounts, some are noticeably missing — including paperless billing, and military discounts.
Canceling Your Policy
Should you decide to cancel your policy with Travelers, customer service representatives say that calling in is the preferred method. However, you can also work directly with a Travelers agent, and he or she can submit documentation on your behalf. Either way, you will need to be sure to have all of the pertinent information on hand, including:
- Your name, address, and phone number
- Your policy number
- The date you want your policy to end
- Your new insurer’s name and policy number, if you’re switching providers
If you’re canceling your car insurance for reasons other than switching providers (for instance, selling your car), you may need to provide further documentation (like proof of sale).
Cancellations can go into effect immediately, or at a future date of your choosing. Representatives caution to give plenty of notice if you’re on an automated payment plan. Be sure to speak to your representative about any possible remaining financial obligations.
