What vehicles qualify as farm vehicles?

Farmers have many types of vehicles that help them work. They use tractors, pickup trucks, box trucks, and sometimes semis to haul, move and work the land or livestock.

In order to get a farm vehicle discount, you must have a vehicle that qualifies as a farm vehicle.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a farm vehicle is one that is:

  • operated by an owner-operator of a farm, or by a family member or employee of the owner-operator
  • transports agricultural products, livestock, farm machinery, or supplies to or from a farm
  • not used in for-hire motor carrier operations

A farm vehicle can be a motor vehicle (except vehicles that transport passengers for hire), motorcycle, trailer, or semi-trailer used to work on a farm.

What is the most common farm vehicle?

The most common vehicle on a farm is a pickup truck. Pickup trucks transport, haul, and tow trailers on the farm, but they can also be used on public roads for everyday errands.

Using a pickup truck for farming purposes more than fifty percent of the time qualifies it for affordable farm vehicle discount auto insurance, and buying farm vehicle discount auto insurance can help a farmer cut costs on his farm.

Farm truck policies are usually much cheaper than standard auto insurance. Farm truck insurance will cover accidents regardless of what the truck was being used for at the time of the accident.

What are limited-use agricultural vehicles?

There are some rules to being classified as a limited use agricultural vehicle. Limited use agricultural vehicles are defined as those that travel less than 7,500 miles per year. They can only travel on public highways via direct routes and not more than 25 miles one way.

Limited use agricultural vehicles are allowed to drive to other parts of a single farm enterprise, drive to a municipal landfill, a repair shop, or from a point of sale to the owner’s farm.

Limited use agricultural vehicles also have to file a certification of farm routes form when they are registered. These vehicles can be covered under limited use agricultural vehicle insurance to be protected in an accident.

Do farm vehicles qualify as commercial vehicles?

Some farmers use box trucks, semi-trucks, and flatbed trucks to transport their goods to market. Semi-trailers are classified as commercial vehicles, unlike box trucks and pickups, which can also be categorized as limited-use agricultural vehicles.

Progressive farm truck insurance covers a variety of farm vehicles including box trucks, pickup trucks, and semi-trucks. Heavy farm trucks, including semis, can be expensive to insure.

The majority of heavy trucks cost between $10,000 to $15,000 per year to insure. The farm semi insurance cost is usually on the lower end, closer to $10,000 per year mainly because they face low risks hauling agricultural products.

What does a farm truck insurance policy cover?

Farm truck policies are similar to auto insurance policies. You can choose different coverage options depending upon the insurance company you choose. You can choose from many of the same coverage options as auto insurance:

It’s also possible with some insurance companies to combine farm truck insurance coverage with a farm insurance policy, which could qualify you for a multi-policy discount.

It’s smart to get multiple farm vehicle discount auto insurance quotes before deciding which one works best for you.
