Are you in good hands with Allstate?
Allstate first opened its doors in 1931. General Robert E. Wood, the president of Sears, Roebuck, & Co. had the idea in 1930 to start an auto insurance company and sell insurance by mail.
Since the automobile was in its early infancy, this concept was unprecedented in history and the first of its kind in the country. and has been one of the leading insurance companies in the United States for 88 years. Allstate started offering other types of insurance in the 1950s. They offer a multitude of insurance options, one of them being car insurance.
Allstate was one of the first advocates of making seatbelt use mandatory, in the 1960s.
There are multiple car insurance companies out there. You may be trying to decide between one insurance company and Allstate. If Allstate is one of your choices, you might be wondering how it stacks up overall.
Well, wonder no longer. This complete guide will cover Allstate ratings, how to make a claim, and much more.
When it comes to ratings, there are many different types out there: financial, consumer, and much more. As a customer, you must decide on the rating that best fits your needs.
– A.M. Best
The A.M. Best rating focuses on insurer financial strength and creditworthiness. Ratings are periodically updated. When it comes to the rating at A.M. Best: A+ rating.
– Better Business Bureau
The Better Business Bureau, or BBB for short, is “an ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers trust each other”. These ratings are based solely on business/customer trust. Customers can either praise businesses, or file complaints, though customer reviews do not factor into ratings. Complaint history, however, does.
BBB’s ratings range from A+ to F, the lowest rating. Businesses that are BBB accredited “means BBB has determined that the business meets accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints.” The Better Business Bureau: A+ rating.
According to the BBB, Allstate strives to solve any customer complaints.
– Moody’s Rating
Moody’s Rating is more focused on bonds and global markets: “Since John Moody devised the first bond ratings more than a century ago, Moody’s rating systems have evolved in response to the increasing depth and breadth of the global capital markets.”
These “credit ratings”, so to speak, can influence whether an investor puts his or her money into a company.
If you are interested in how Allstate is doing on the stock market, Moody’s Ratings are something you will want to take a closer look at. With Moody’s Rating: Outlook stable.
– NAIC Complaint Index
The NAIC Complaint Index shows how a company compares to other companies in the same line of business (in this case, insurance).
It is a statistic that considers a company’s share of complaints in relation to its market share (share of business in the national market). The NAIC Complaint Index for Allstate stands as follows: 421 complaints in 2018. 2.18 complaint index, higher than the national average of 1.11.
– J.D. Power Rating
The J.D. Power Rating is a “guide to finding which products or services ranked highest in J.D. Power Consumer Studies. All Power Circle Ratings are based on the opinions of a sample of consumers from a variety of industries who have used or owned the product or service being rated.” They survey people from all across the United States.
These ratings can be a useful tool for customers. The J.D. Power Rating for Allstate: About Average.

Allstate has a long history and a well-known name.
Based in Northbrook, Illinois, Allstate was among the early companies to give safe drivers lower rates in the 1930s, and one of the first to open a drive-in claim office to make handling claims easier in the 1950s.
The company was an advocate for mandatory seat belt laws in the 1960s. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Allstate was key in establishing the safety factors supporting the use of airbags.
In 2000, Allstate instituted its Good Hands Network, which allowed consumers to purchase insurance policies over the Internet.
Now let’s turn the pages of the history book and delve deeper into the company history of Allstate. The company has indeed grown in market share since its humble beginnings in the 1930s. When it comes to how much of the market Allstate now owns financially, the short answer is: it varies from year to year.

- 2015: 5.07 percent.
- 2016: 5.00 percent.
- 2017: 4.88 percent.
- 2018: 4.88 percent.
Market share in the United States has seen a slow, but minuscule declines in market share. In 2015, Allstate owned 5.07 percent of the national market, as compared to the following year, when they owned 5.00 percent of the national market. – Allstate’s Commercials
Even if you do not know what Allstate is, you will definitely recognize them from the commercials you see on TV with the company mascot, Mr. Mayhem.
Have a laugh at this one: Mayhem being a car thief.
Mr. Mayhem is a little evil here in this commercial about a blind spot:
– Allstate in the Community
Allstate is more than just an insurance company with funny commercials. They pride themselves on a culture of service. Over 78,000 Allstate agent and employee volunteers have put in 1 million volunteer hours since 2011. Over 7,500 service projects are completed each year by agents, volunteers, and community service heroes.
“Getting involved is the norm at Allstate. That’s because we have so many programs in place that make it easy for agents and employees to give back.”
Allstate has formed The Allstate Foundation and established Bring out the Good Month “to help agents and employees donate time and resources in force”.
In 2018, the Allstate Foundation has contributed $7.5 million to community initiatives, has assisted 2,983 community groups, and has had volunteers log 258,000 hours of volunteer work.
Part of the Allstate Foundation: “Good Starts Young”.
“Allstate Foundation Good Starts Young® helps youth build social and emotional learning skills crucial to learning and leading so they can make a tangible impact on our world.”
Part of the skills they teach young people: social and emotional skills, the ability to unlock the future leader lurking inside of them, and ways to lead youth to a better tomorrow.
The Allstate Foundation also started Purple Purse® .
“Allstate Foundation Purple Purse® works to end domestic violence by offering the financial empowerment tools, resources and support necessary to find independence.”
Purple Purse® was started to combat the issue of domestic violence. One in four women will experience some kind of domestic abuse in her lifetime, and 99 percent of those cases involve financial abuse. Purple Purse® has helped 1.7 million women since 2005 achieve financial freedom to go from domestic abuse victims to domestic abuse survivors.
Allstate also strives to reduce its carbon footprint.
“From LEED-certified office buildings to water-filtering stations that keep more than 1 million plastic bottles out of landfills, being good stewards of the environment is second nature to us.”
Allstate takes climate change seriously.
“Allstate understands that climate change will likely exacerbate the frequency and severity of natural catastrophes. Consequently, we partner with national and local organizations to better prepare and protect communities, strengthen the country’s financial infrastructure to deal with major events, promote better loss prevention and mitigation through stronger building codes and sensible land use policies, and develop programs to strengthen first responders’ ability to help communities recover from catastrophe.”
They also strive to not contribute to speeding up climate change by reducing the energy and emissions they use.
“…we continue to reduce consumption by consolidating office space, recapturing heat energy as a byproduct of Allstate’s data center operations and optimizing the use of energy efficient equipment and systems. Examples of this include HVAC equipment and controls, reduced-lighting power density designs and daylight harvesting in Allstate’s offices.”
They also are cutting down on waste by reducing the amount of paper they use, reducing employee cafeteria waste, recycling small electronics, and offering water fountains and bottling stations at all their offices.
Allstate wishes to make its mark by instilling its company values in quality customer service, transparent governance and ethics, community service, workforce and inclusive diversity, adaptability to climate change, and sustainability. This is how they hope to forge into the future.

We develop each other, looking for ways to challenge ourselves and coach others, so all employees can reach their potential. They pride themselves on being open and honest with their employees, along with encouraging a work-life balance and finding the time to have fun outside of work, and it shows in employee reviews and ratings. For instance, on Glassdoor:
59 percent of employees would recommend working at Allstate, and most of the rating distribution lands in the four to the five-star range.
One review on Glassdoor gives both the pros and the cons of working at Allstate. This person is a Senior Consultant, and this review is as of July 11, 2019.
Pros: “The people and the benefits are great here. If you network into certain groups you will find there’s pretty much an expert for everything so the sky is the limit to getting the resources you need to perform your job and learn new things. As far as benefits, I had 25 days of PTO plus 5 days of carry-over–something not every company offers.”
Cons: “Just as there are pockets of the company where a premium placed on critical thinking and business acumen, there are also pockets of the company where your career basically boils down to how good you can sell yourself–even if you do it by misleading others. This proves to be an ethical dilemma for much of the best analytical talent.”
Comparably also asked Allstate employees what they thought of working at Allstate. These results are as of Quarter 1 of 2019.
Although the sample size was small (192 participants), they gave the workplace culture an overall grade of B. The employees in this survey also though favorably of the CEO, Tom Wilson, giving him an overall rating of 75 out of 100 possible points.
When it comes to the overall culture report card in this survey:
- Work Culture: B
- CEO Rating: A-
- Perks and Benefits: C+
- Executive Team: B
- Compensation Score: C+
- Office Culture Score: C
The difference between work culture and office culture: work culture is the environment a company creates for its employees, while office culture includes many things, such as work environment, company mission, value, ethics, expectations, and goals.

If you blinked twice at the annual average of Michigan car insurance premiums, you are not alone. There are three reasons why premiums are so high in Michigan:
- No-Fault Car Insurance.
- Personal Injury Protection required.
- High rates of insurance fraud in Michigan.
Market share is how much of the national market a particular company holds.
This is data from the NAIC, from the years 2013-2018.
In 2018, Allstate holds close to 10 percent of the market. All major competitors in 2018: State Farm, Geico, and Progressive, hold more in market share. State Farm holds the most.
– Average Allstate Male vs Female Car Insurance Rates
We know that the myth of males paying more for car insurance than females is more than a myth in certain instances. With Allstate, it is no exception.
|Married 35-year old female||Married 35-year old male||Married 60-year old female||Married 60-year old male||Single 17-year old female||Single 17-year old male||Single 25-year old female||Single 25-year old male|

– Average Allstate Rates by Make and Model
When it comes to the kind of vehicle you drive, it factors into insurance costs. Certain makes and models will cost you more to insure.

When it comes to credit, in the United States, it seems we are faring well. In the Experian report titled The State of Credit, the average credit score in the United States stands at 675–the highest it has been since 2012.
And when it comes to your credit score, it does factor into the price of your car insurance.
Much like with coverage level, the amount you pay as a result of your credit is directly proportionate to how good your credit is. If your credit is good, you will pay less. If your credit is fair or poor, you will wind up paying more.
– Average Allstate Driving Record Rates
If you have a clean driving record, Allstate rewards you with lower rates.
With accidents and speeding violations, you are paying about $200 more. If you choose to drive under the influence, you are paying about $2,000 more.

If you are engaged, newlyweds, or married, and having those discounts are important to you, Allstate does not offer married couples discounts. Nor do they offer any type of loyalty discount.
What is also shocking: with all of the education discounts they offer, Allstate does not offer discounts for students and alumni, nor do they offer discounts if you choose to continue your education beyond a Bachelors Degree.

Design of Website/App
Allstate, for convenience, has both a website and a mobile app. The mobile app contains the following features, as per the app page:
• Drivewise® – Earn rewards for safe driving.
• Insurance ID cards – The glovebox digging ends now.
• View auto coverage – Know how you’re protected.
• QuickFoto Claim® – File claims in a flash.
• My Agent – Access your agent’s info.
• Gas Finder – Locate and compare prices of nearby gas stations.
The most common complaints are that the app freezes up and that it drains the battery considerably.
Here is one such review:
“This app crashes most of the time! It will get stuck on the Allstate screen and it has a circle spinning underneath. I am really frustrated with it! I cannot even order stuff with my points using a credit card. It will only accept a debit card! I ordered magazines using the points back in March and have not received it yet. The daily deals is marked ‘sold out’ soon after it is posted. Makes me wonder how many are they even allowing? For such a big company you NEED to fix your app!!”
Here is another:
“the drivewise app drains your battery/data because it is automatically. to shut it off, you have to open the app, log in with your password EVERY time, go to settigs, to go drivewise, and turn it off. same process to turn it back on. you end up having it on all the time, and killing your phone, or keeping it off and not getting credit for your safe driving. it should be SIGNIFICANTLY easier to turn this feature on and off.”
Out of 31,625 on the app, it has a considerable amount of five-star reviews. The app might work on your phone and it might not.
The good thing: Allstate is responsive to complaints. Here is the response from Allstate to the complaint about the app draining the battery.
“We know battery drain is a big concern, so we’re always making improvements to minimize impact. Please make sure you’ve installed the most recent app update and are using the most current version of your phone’s operating system. Plus, our team will keep looking for ways to optimize our app and your experience.”
When it comes to using the website, the information on the website is organized, neatly and cleanly, into dropdown menus. Pictures, coupled along with the descriptions, help you to find the information you want quickly.
Any company and corporate information are located in link categories at the bottom of the page. They also have different articles about various tools and resources.
Allstate, with recognizable icons, offers the different ways you can connect with them on social media.
This is a website that puts the customer front and center with easy navigation and easy ways to find the information you need. Any tools and resources are under the category “Tools and Resources” at the top of the page, and Customer Support–where you can find the answers to any of your questions–is easy to find under the link at the bottom of the page “Customer Support”. Everything is clear and easy to find, which is appreciated as a person who is looking to find the information I need quickly.
On mobile, however, it is a different story.
On mobile, Allstate’s website does not look as clean. While it is easy for you to find a quote on Allstate, as the mobile website makes this front and center, the dropdown easy-to-use navigable menu is not on the mobile site. Instead, it is hidden under a hamburger menu.
No, not the food. It’s an icon that consists of three lines. When you click on it, additional links appear.
Allstate’s mobile website does not give an indication that any content links are under the hamburger menu, so it is truly out-of-sight and out-of-mind. This makes it confusing for browsers of the site. Though it seems that Allstate is responsive to complaints about mobile functionality, so it stands to reason in the future these issues will be fixed.
The Bottom Line
Allstate is going to be the best company for you if you are a safe driver and you want more supplemental coverage options. Allstate offers coverage in all 50 states, including Washington, D.C. They also offer multiple discounts, which can be good if you are looking to save money.
If you want an insurance company with ethics and values, Allstate is heavily involved in communities, community initiatives, sustainability, and the environment.
It is worth getting a quote to see how your premium will look with Allstate.
