If you’re not familiar with Prudential auto insurance on a personal level, you’re probably still a familiar with their corporate logo. That’s because Prudential’s Rock of Gibraltar logo is one of the most recognized business symbols in the entire world.
The company chose the Rock of Gibraltar at the behest of one of its sales agents in 1890. The rock symbolizes strength, stability, and power; all qualities one that would hope for in an insurance provider.

The auto insurance division is just one of many organized under parent company Prudential Insurance Company of America Inc. Founded in 1875 by John F. Dryden, Prudential offers a long line of property and casualty products as well as a life insurance, annuities, asset management services, real estate brokerage, and various types of investment vehicles. Prudential is a Fortune Global 500 and Fortune 500 company providing its products or services in the U.S. and 30 other countries.
Like so many other large auto insurance companies, Prudential utilizes a vast network of local, independent agents to sell and service their policies. So extensive is their network that an Internet search of a mid-sized mid-western city produced several dozen results.
It seems possible that major metropolitan areas like Detroit, Chicago, or Dallas may yield up to 100 results in a standard search. Needless to say most areas of the country will have access to at least one Prudential auto insurance agent.
The only difficulty in finding a local Prudential agent may rest in the fact that the company is so diversified. In other words, you may start calling a list of the names linked to Prudential in your local area only to find that you have to work your way through a real estate broker, investment banker, and a life insurance salesman before you ever reach the individual responsible for auto insurance. It can be confusing to some degree.
Thankfully, on the company website you’ll find an agent locator engine. By simply entering the information requested you’ll be able to find a local auto insurance agent within a reasonable distance from your home. The tool has proved to be invaluable for untold numbers of individuals looking for a local agent.
The sheer size of Prudential means that there are literally thousands of corporate locations all around the world. Throw in a virtually unlimited number of local agents representing the company and the total number jumps into the millions.
For corporate purposes however, each of the company’s individual divisions has its own office within the various worldwide regions where they are active. There are corporate headquarters are located in Newark New, NJ at the following address:
Prudential Insurance Company of America Inc.
Prudential Plaza 802
Newark, NJ 07102
If you’re interested in speaking with a local office you may use the agent locator tool previously mentioned. One of the nice options of this tool is that it allows you to search for offices that handle just the financial services and investment portions of the Prudential’s business – if that’s what you prefer. For real estate locations, your best bet is to simply look in your local phone book Yellow Pages.
Although not in the area of auto insurance, Prudential has been the subject of one high-profile case when they were sued by the families of military personnel who were killed in the line of duty. The lawsuit was filed in 2010 and accused the company of manipulating life insurance payments made to the families of deceased soldiers in an attempt to maximize their interest earnings for as long as possible.
Similar lawsuits have been made against other life insurance companies in the past, and all have been thrown out of court with no merit. In order to appease the families involved, Prudential temporarily altered its life insurance payouts in order to get the families of deceased soldiers their payments as quickly as possible.
As far as auto insurance claims are concerned, nothing stands out negatively against this company. There are the standard negative customer reviews that just about every insurance company receives, but nothing out of the ordinary that should cause a suspicion for the average, everyday auto insurance customer. Among the complaints registered by unhappy customers are those in which the customer claims the payout was too small or too long in coming.
Some negative reviewers remarked about impersonal and unhelpful agents during the claims process. However, like other insurance companies that do business the same way, a poor attitude among agents is more reflective of the agents themselves rather than Prudential. Since local agents are free to represent seven or eight other insurance companies it is not necessarily in their best interests to make sure Prudential customers are extremely happy. This leads to some agents to be careless.
When looking at customer reviews for Prudential products and services overall, the company receives fairly good marks. But for some reason, when it comes to auto insurance reviews, Prudential doesn’t necessarily fare so well. Among half a dozen insurance review sites researched for this article, Prudential was rated below average in four categories:
- Coverage provided
- Claims and service
- Overall customer service
Why this is so is unclear.
Nonetheless, one such site gave the company an overall rating of 1.8 out of 5. The two highest grades were for cost and coverage offered, at 2.2 and 1.6 respectively, while the two lowest grades were for claims and overall customer service. It would be interesting to note the results of any quantitative research attempting to determine whether such low ratings can be attributed to the corporate organization, the individual agents, or a combination of both.
Keep in mind that despite Prudential’s low ratings for auto insurance, the company has several million policies in force all across the world. Customer reviews are helpful to a certain extent but they almost always tend to lean toward the negative. It is advisable to take Prudential reviews into consideration, but give equal weight to the broad success this company has achieved.
