What You Should Know About The Hanover Insurance Group

The Hanover Insurance Group is an insurance company offering several different options for car insurance coverage. The company has accident forgiveness, all the necessary liability coverages, rental car reimbursement, personal injury protection, medical payments, and more.

In addition, Hanover offers original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coverage, new car replacement, and deductible dividends. The company also offers roadside assistance coverage, which provides emergency assistance and towing services 24/7.

Hanover also offers Prestige coverage to protect high-value cars and vehicles. The Prestige option allows individuals to tailor their coverages to meet their unique and complex insurance needs. The Prestige coverage option includes global rental coverage, rental upgrade coverage, travel companion insurance, lifetime original equipment manufacturer coverage, and new car extender insurance.

In addition to the benefits already mentioned, Hanover’s Prestige coverage includes additional accident insurance for rental cars anywhere in the world. The rental car reimbursement coverage doesn’t carry a daily limit, and the policy reimburses customers up to $6,000 in total coverage while their vehicle gets repaired after a covered incident.

Prestige coverage also includes glass repair and replacement coverage without requiring a deductible. So if your vehicle glass gets damaged, you can have it repaired or replaced at no out-of-pocket expense.

With travel companion insurance, Hanover pays for covered trip interruptions, up to $2,550 for towing, all covered roadside assistance claims, and $1,000 for hotel stays, food, and other transportation.

The original equipment manufacturer coverage with Hanover allows policyholders to receive original replacement equipment and parts if their vehicle gets damaged in a covered accident. In addition, if your vehicle is a total loss, Hanover’s new car replacement coverage pays you the cash value of a vehicle one model newer than the one you had.

In addition, the deductible dividends coverage with Hanover allows policyholders to save money on their claims. If you file a claim with this coverage option, you’ll save money on any out-of-pocket expenses associated with the claim. Hanover allows you to file a claim by calling a local agent or via the company’s website.

Hanover offers lifetime OEM insurance coverage. This coverage guarantees that you receive brand-name parts if your vehicle gets damaged in a covered incident. Additionally, Hanover’s new car extender coverage pays for the full replacement cost of any equipment if your vehicle is a total loss.

Lastly, Hanover offers specific coverage for pets. If you purchase pet insurance with Hanover, you’ll have up to $2,500 in auto-related pet injury coverage for your furry friend. Hanover also offers coverage for classic and vintage vehicles at an agreed-upon value and doesn’t factor in depreciation.

The Hanover Insurance Group Insurance Coverage Options

If you’re looking to customize your car insurance policy, Hanover may be a great company for you. Hanover offers multiple insurance types to its policyholders to ensure they meet their state’s requirements for coverage.

Some of the standard coverage options Hanover offers include:

  • Bodily injury liability. If you’re at fault in an accident and one or more people get injured, Hanover pays for the medical attention they need up to the policy limits.
  • Property damage liability. If you’re at fault in an accident and one or more vehicles or pieces of property get damaged, Hanover’s property damage liability pays for the repairs up to the policy limits.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP). If you or a passenger in your vehicle get injured in an accident, PIP with Hanover will cover your medical bills and other expenses.
  • Medical payments (MedPay). Like PIP, Hanover’s MedPay coverage covers medical expenses associated with a covered incident.
  • Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. Suppose you’re in an accident with a motorist who doesn’t have car insurance or doesn’t carry enough coverage. In that case, Hanover’s uninsured or underinsured motorist insurance helps to pay for vehicle damages.
  • Collision insurance. Collision insurance with Hanover pays for your vehicle damages if you’re in an at-fault car accident. You’ll have to pay for repairs out of pocket if you’re in the same scenario and only carry liability coverage.
  • Comprehensive insurance. If your vehicle gets damaged outside of a car accident, such as inclement weather or vandalism, Hanover’s comprehensive coverage pays for repairs to your car.

Hanover also offers add-on coverage options to protect customers behind the wheel. Some of Hanover’s additional coverages include:

  • Roadside assistance. Provides towing and emergency services for stranded drivers and cars.
  • Trip interruption coverage. Reimburses you up to $1,000 for lodging, food, travel, and rental expenses if a covered loss causes you to become stranded at least 100 miles from home.
  • Ultimate rental reimbursement. This coverage pays for a daily rental car while your car is in the shop. Hanover’s rental reimbursement covers up to $3,000.
  • Rental coverage upgrade. This coverage allows you to upgrade your rental to a luxury or large SUV while your car gets repaired after a covered incident.
  • New car replacement. This coverage replaces your car if damaged within one year of purchase. New car replacement also kicks in if the vehicle has fewer than 15,000 miles. Hanover doesn’t deduct depreciation.
  • Second chance accident forgiveness. This coverage helps you avoid a premium increase after your first accident within any three-year period.
  • Deductible dividends. Deductible dividends reduce your policy’s collision deductible to a minimum of $100 if you ever need to make Hanover claims.
  • Extended non-owner coverage. This coverage provides excess liability and medical coverage for the personal use of a work vehicle.
  • Pet injury insurance. This coverage helps with up to $2,500 in expenses if your pet gets injured or dies from a covered accident.
  • Accidental air bag deployment coverage. This coverage helps to pay the cost of reinstalling your air bag if it deploys.
  • Accidental death benefit. This coverage reimburses $10,000 to family members if the insured’s death results from a covered accident.
  • Home care service coverage. This coverage pays up to $2,500 for home-based services if you become temporarily incapacitated after a covered accident.

Depending on your needs, one or more of these add-on options may work well for you and your family. If so, you can call Hanover and speak with a representative to learn more about your options and how much different coverages might cost.

What is SmartPath with Hanover?

You can enroll your child in Hanover’s SmartPath program if you have a teen driver. SmartPath allows Hanover to monitor your teen’s driving patterns while helping them drive safely on the road.

Hanover’s SmartPath allows you to monitor your teen’s driving habits to see how they’re driving. SmartPath monitors things like:

  • Stops and starts
  • Acceleration
  • Overall speed
  • Driving time of day
  • Distracted driving

The SmartPath app from Hanover monitors how and when your teen driver stops and starts. Seeing these patterns could help you coach your teen to be a better driver.

Acceleration is a significant factor in terms of safe driving. If you notice that your teen driver accelerates too quickly, you can help them understand the perils of doing so before they end up in a car accident.

Many teen drivers get in trouble for speeding, which can lead to several safety issues on the road. If the SmartPath app shows your teen driver is driving too fast, you can address the issue and encourage them to follow the posted speed limits.

You’re probably well aware of when your teen driver gets behind the wheel. However, teens who drive late at night or early in the morning are more likely to get involved in an accident. Monitoring the time of day your teen is behind the wheel could help you know more about their overall driving habits and safe practices.

Lastly, the SmartPath app lets you see if your teen is texting while driving. Texting and driving is a serious issue — if your teen chooses to text and drive, you should address it with them as soon as possible.

Does Hanover offer other types of insurance?

In addition to car insurance, Hanover also offers additional insurance options, such as:

  • Condo insurance
  • Renters insurance
  • Home insurance
  • Motorcycle insurance
  • RV insurance
  • Boat and watercraft insurance
  • Umbrella insurance
  • Business and commercial car insurance
  • Landlord insurance
  • Manufactured home insurance
  • Classic and vintage car insurance
  • Identity theft insurance

You could bundle insurance policies with Hanover to save money on your overall premiums. Call an agent to get a quote and see how much multiple insurance products would be.

The Hanover Insurance Group Insurance Rates Breakdown

Car insurance rates with Hanover vary for several reasons. Depending on your unique situation, you may pay less with Hanover than its competitors, though the company statistically costs more than many other well-respected insurance providers.

Hanover car insurance rates vary based on different factors, like:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Marital status
  • Credit history
  • Driving history
  • ZIP code
  • Coverage type

While some of these factors may seem like they shouldn’t impact your car insurance rates, you may be surprised to learn how much they actually do.

How much is car insurance with Hanover Insurance?

According to the Insurance Information Institute, car insurance costs vary depending on several factors, though not all companies use the same parameters. Still, the company tends to offer rates that are more expensive than rates with other competitors.

You won’t know how much you’ll pay for car insurance coverage until you get a quote with Hanover. Doing so will help you learn how much you’ll pay for coverage, and it will also help you compare quotes with other companies to make an informed decision.

Age and Car Insurance Rates

If you’re a teen or young adult driver, you can expect to pay more for car insurance coverage with Hanover. Most insurance companies charge new drivers higher-than-average rates because these drivers pose a higher risk of filing a claim.

Age can also be a factor once you hit your 60s. Many insurance companies charge higher rates when a person hits 65, assuming older drivers pose a higher risk of getting in an accident and filing an insurance claim.

State Farm$82$82$76$76$84$84
Travelers$93$94$89$90$96$97

If you’re a new or senior driver, your rates may be higher than expected.

Gender and Car Insurance Rates

A person’s gender can also affect car insurance rates.

Statistically, men drive at higher speeds and are more likely to file an insurance claim than women. So many insurance companies charge men higher auto insurance rates. If you’re a teen male driver especially, you may have very high coverage premiums.

Marital Status and Car Insurance Rates

Married couples tend to pay less for car insurance than single adults.

Married couples are statistically less likely to file a claim than single people, so insurance companies often charge them less for car insurance coverage. However, you may notice higher insurance premiums if you’re not married.

Poor Credit and Car Insurance Rates

Believe it or not, your credit score can significantly impact your car insurance rates. Insurance companies notice a correlation between poor credit scores and a higher likelihood of filing an insurance claim. As a result, insurance companies often charge people higher rates to mitigate the risk.

Hanover vs. Competitors: Full Coverage Auto Insurance Monthly Rates by Credit Score

Progressive$210$160$110
State Farm$200$150$100
Travelers$250$200$150

If you have low credit, speak with your insurance provider about things you can do to decrease your car insurance rates. Your rates should improve over time as you keep a clean driving history and improve your credit score.

Driving History and Car Insurance Rates

You probably already knew your driving history could significantly impact your car insurance rates. If you have a clean driving record, you should be able to take advantage of affordable insurance premiums. However, if you have a blemish on your record, you may pay higher-than-average rates for coverage.

Traffic violations, speeding tickets, and DUIs/DWIs can significantly increase your car insurance premiums.

If you have violations on your driving record, check with your insurance company to see if there’s anything you can do to improve your auto insurance rates. For example, you may be able to take a defensive driving course or safe driving exam to help keep your premiums down.

ZIP Codes and Car Insurance Rates

Your location impacts your insurance rates. However, did you know that your ZIP code also impacts your car insurance premiums?

If you live in an area with a lot of traffic, you may pay higher rates for coverage. Additionally, you could pay more if you live in a city with more vandalism.

Your ZIP code could also help you save money if you live in an area with a low crime rate.

Coverage Types and Car Insurance Rates

The types of car insurance coverage you purchase can also impact your car insurance rates. If you purchase a minimum coverage policy that simply meets your state’s requirement for liability insurance, you should pay lower-than-average rates for insurance.

Hanover vs. Competitors: Liability Auto Insurance Average Rates
Insurance CompanyMonthly Rates
Allstate$61
Farmers$53
Geico$30
Hanover$47
Liberty Mutual$67
Nationwide$44

State Farm$33

However, you’ll pay more if you choose higher coverage levels, like a full coverage policy with both collision and comprehensive insurance.

To lower your rates, you could choose lower levels of coverage or ask to increase your deductible.

Though a liability-only policy may help you pay less in car insurance premiums, you may want to choose higher levels of coverage to maintain more protection when you’re behind the wheel.

Slow and poor service.

Our truck was in a head on accident 26 days ago. Hanover was very slow to respond and at one point we went 6 days with no calls. They eventually decided to total our truck and came back with 4 "comps", 2 had duel rear wheels and not a 4X4. Ours has 2 rear wheels and is a 4X4. One "comp" was a stretch cab and not a full 4 door like ours. The other one had higher miles and was in average condition. I finally got them to agree to the $17,000 repair...

I finally got them to agree to the $17,000 repairs when our truck is valued at $30,000(2 actual comps that I found on eBay). My 30 days car rental will have long expired before I see one red cent from this company to fix my truck. See attached photos. The red truck is mine, the white one is their best "comp" valued at $20,000.

I had the worst experience I’ve ever had with an insurance company with Hanover. Someone reported an accident to Hanover without my knowledge. They apparently got my information through my plates because the only information they supplied was a picture of my vehicle. I told Hanover I had no knowledge of any accident and was involved in no accident. I further supplied them with details to show the impossibility of the alleged incident. They said I had no proof of innocence so the accuser was getting a payout, but that neither driver was ruled at fault. I later found out that they had put me at fault! I have no at fault incidents on my record in my 15 years driving except this. I’m looking into my options fighting it over them. The second thing that really irritated me with them was the unprofessionalism of the agent handling the case. It may be reflective of only him and not the company, but he was highly unprofessional in the way he spoke to me. If I hadn’t known better, I would’ve thought I was the accuser and not the insured! I was very calm and neutral toned with him intentionally and he would speak with sarcasm, as if he knew me and had a personal issue with me. I’m sure I have never met the man but I was left very confused after every interaction. A truly wild experience!

Great company, great services.

Very good service, easy to deal with and respectful. I don't have any claim in Auto Insurance, but my home owner Insurance gave me very good impression.

Fast, Professional Service

I have had a claim and was amazed at the service in getting it handled. I had a fender bender at 11 AM and by 2 PM I had dropped the car off at the dealership repair shop and all the details were taken care of. Can't beat that for service.

Happy with auto insurance policy

Have used auto claims service and roadside assistance. Both have worked well and prices are good in my area.

When all prices were in, I went with Hanover Ins. Group .

I was checking the prices for house and car insurance which I do every two years, to make sure the prices I was paying were in line. I thought the company that I had been with for 25+ had gotten very high. I took my current present policies, so everyone would price me with the same level of insurance protection. When a companies gave me their Quotes Hanover Insurance came in the lowest.

Trustworthy

They’ve been there every time I’ve needed them. Excellent customer service experience so far. I had bought a hybrid vehicle & the wiring is almost like food to rodents & I couldn’t believe it and it happened again days later to the rental, also a hybrid. This all happened right when the first wave of the pandemic hit & my experience with all the parties, with the exception of the dealership, was wonderful
