Picking the right car insurance is a daunting task. With so many providers all offering variations of the same thing, you could spend hours just comparing auto insurance rates.

Because of all the different options, one deciding factor is which companies offer free rate quotes.

Listed here are some of the top companies that offer free auto insurance quotes as well as some detail as to why you might pick one over the other.

Popular Companies with Free Quotes

Most major car insurance companies today will offer free rate quotes over the phone or online. Some of the top companies you might want to consider are:

  • Allstate
  • Geico
  • Progressive
  • State Farm
  • 21st Century
  • Nationwide
  • The General
  • Farmers

Each of these companies offers auto insurance rate quotes for free and each has a separate set of benefits associated with choosing that one. The major features of coverage are shared between the groups but no two are exactly alike.

Which company offers what I need?

While all companies will provide the coverage required by the law, price and features set them all apart. Some of the specific features offered by particular insurers follow.

Allstate

Allstate auto insurance offers a program called “Your Choice” which offers several appealing benefits including:

  • Accident Forgiveness This promises that, should you have an accident, your rates will stay the same
  • Safe Driving Bonus – For every six months you spend without an accident Allstate will write you a check worth a maximum amount of 5 percent of your premium
  • Deductible Rewards program $100 off of your deductible when you sign up and an addition $100 (up to $500 total) each year you don’t have any accidents past that
  • New Car Replacement – If your car is total within the first three model years Allstate can replace it for you

Geico

The primary benefit of Geico is the number of discounts that you can rack together quickly for a lower premium. Discounts are available for the following as well as some others:

  • Airbags
  • Anti-lock breaks
  • Anti-theft system
  • Clean driving record
  • Seat belt use
  • Driver education programs
  • Military experience
  • Having multiple cars or policies through Geico

Progressive

One of the big selling points of Progressive is the “Snapshot” program. This program is similar to ones offered by other companies in that it keeps a record of your driving habits and, if you’re a safe driver, offers relative discounts based on this.

What’s different about this program is that Progressive actually gives you a device to keep in your car for 30 days that actually takes examples of how you drive.

This program is nice for many drivers because it can only cause insurance rates to go down, not raise, even if you do have some bad habits.

State Farm

The main benefit of State Farm coverage is personal attention. State Farm has local offices and agents throughout the country with the intention of helping you not feel like a number.

In addition to customer service, State Farm offers a “Double Check” program to ensure that you’re spending as little as possible and offers a number of ways to pay as well as flexible payment periods.

21st Century

21st Century Insurance offers an incentive program of their own called the “Security Advantage Program.” This program doesn’t have the sheer number of perks offered by other companies but, rather, has a few big ones.

In an ideal world, you won’t ever need any of these but when you do need them, they can be lifesavers. The Security Advantage Program gives you:

  • 24-hour roadside assistance
  • Identity Theft Restoration Service
  • 24-Hour Emergency Medical and Travel Assistance

Nationwide

As you probably know from the commercials, Nationwide’s claim to fame is that they are “on your side.” Although mostly just a catchphrase, they do offer a couple of services of the same name.

Nationwide’s “On Your Side” claims service offers pre-screened repair shops and written guarantees for repairs.

Their “On Your Side” review is a free consultation with an agent to help save money and work with your budget.

Finally, like many others, Nationwide offers discounts for different qualifiers, like having multiple cars, policies or safety features.

The General

This company is small compared to some of the other giants on this list and doesn’t offer many of the same incentive programs you’ll see elsewhere.

The General does offer very competitive rates. This company also has a reputation for being good for persons who have difficulty obtaining insurance through other companies, whether because of bad credit or poor driving history.

Farmers

The single biggest benefit of going with Farmers Insurance Group is the 18,000 agents they have working with them. This means a lot of personal communication rather than automated greetings.

On top of this, like many others, Farmers offers a variety of types of insurance, meaning that you can bundle home, life or any other insurance with your auto coverage for substantial discounts.
