When your auto insurance policy no longer fits your needs or you feel that you are paying too much for your current policy, you may consider switching to a new insurance carrier.

This can be a very easy and stress-free way of finding and obtaining a new policy with instant results that can be accomplished when done online.

Review Your Current Auto Insurance Policy

Just because you think your current insurance policy is doing the trick does not mean that it actually is. Take the time to review your policy and make sure you understand what it says.

If you have any doubts as to what coverage you have or do not have, then ask your agent. Your insurance policy is there to help you, not confuse you.

If you find your insurance policy lacking in coverage, ask your agent or search your insurance carrier’s website to find out what new insurance rates will be if you add more coverage.

You may find that your policy provides too much coverage that may be completely unnecessary.

Your carrier’s website should be able to let you change your policy coverage options online and provide a new rate immediately.

If you prefer to have an agent do it for you, call your carrier and they can provide a new rate over the phone.

But if you still find that your current insurance carrier is charging you more than you think you should be paying for auto insurance, you have the right to cancel your policy and switch to a new carrier that can offer you lower rates for the same or sometimes more coverage.

You can do this yourself right online.

Shop Around Online for Other Insurance Carriers

The Internet is a wonderful tool. You just have to know how to use it. Find a search engine, such as Google, and type in your key-words such as auto insurance, low insurance rates, or something similar.

Review the results. Try not to rush. Remember that this a very important decision about where you will be spending your money and what type of coverage you will have if you or a family member on your policy is involved in an accident.

When you find an auto insurance carrier who seems right for you at the rates you like, research that company.

Every insurance agency has a financial rating assigned to it.

These ratings can show you such things as that agency’s ability to pay claims that have been filed by other drivers.

Settling on the first insurance agency’s website that you come across may not be the wisest choice.

You should get at least three different insurance quotes from three separate insurance carriers. This can be done easily online.

You will have to enter some information such as your name and type of car you have. In a few seconds, your quote will be processed and displayed to you.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) offers some advice on what you should look for in an auto insurance policy. Types of basic coverage that the BBB says should be included in your insurance policy are:

  • Bodily injury liability
  • Property damage
  • Liability
  • Medical payments
  • Personal injury protection
  • Collision
  • Comprehensive physical damage
  • Uninsured motorist coverage

It may be worth your while to find out just how much your vehicle is currently worth so you can determine just how much insurance you need to cover it or replace it in case of an accident.

The Kelly Blue Book is a great site to visit for this. Enter the vehicle information such as age, accessories, mileage, and any damage it may have. You will get an instant quote on what it is probably worth.

Remember, your quotes are only as accurate as the information that you submit.

Check Your State’s Requirements before Switching

Every state is different and they all have different requirements for drivers. Some states require more of one type of coverage than they do of another.

For example, one state may require that you have a specified amount of coverage for bodily injury, but a lower amount of personal injury coverage.

The Insurance Information Institute’s (III) website offers a great amount of information on how to choose your new auto insurance agency.

There are several factors to take into consideration before making your choice such as area coverage. Not every insurance agency is licensed in each of the 50 states.

Be sure to purchase an online policy that will be effective in your state.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, there are three main reasons that auto insurance is necessary. Important factors to consider when purchasing auto insurance are:

  • Complying with your individual state requirements
  • Complying with your auto loan lender’s requirements such as supplying full coverage if your vehicle is not paid off yet
  • Protecting your assets, which means that your expenses and vehicle repairs will be covered in the event of an accident

Purchase Your New Auto Insurance Policy Online

The quote that is provided to you online is only as accurate as the information that you enter. Make sure that you are honest with yourself and the insurance agency.

If your information is lacking, so will be your insurance policy. Once you have entered your information online, you will need to purchase your new policy.

This will require either a debit card or a credit card. You will not be able to write a check or transfer money at this point. You can only purchase an online policy by making an online payment.

The website name in your browser should begin with “HTTPS”, which means that it is a secured website.

This ensures that your credit card information will be encrypted and used only for its intended purpose. If it does not say this, do not enter your credit card number.

Cancel Your Existing Auto Insurance Policy

Once you have purchased your new insurance policy, then you can cancel your current one. Give your current policy an extra day or so to be in effect before canceling. This will cover you just in case your new insurance policy is caught up in the system somewhere.

While it is true that you only need one insurance policy at a time, it is better to have two insurance policies in effect at the same time than to have none at all.

Technology is not perfect, and it has its glitches. Just to be on the safe side, give yourself at least a 24-hour overlap of coverage.

Most auto insurance policies only run for a term of six months. While it is not mandatory that you complete the six months with that particular insurance agency, check to see if there are any penalties or fees for terminating your policy early.

If you wish to avoid paying any penalties for switching in mid-policy, you can opt to switch at the end of your policy instead.

When you change auto insurance carriers before your current policy ends, you may be subject to a short waiting period before you receive a refund of any premiums you have already paid.

Insurance agencies are required by law to refund those funds to you, but they determine how long it will take to get a check in the mail to you.

Instantly Print Your New Auto Insurance Cards at Home

Not only can you do your own comparison-shopping online in the comfort of your own home, but once you purchase your auto insurance policy, you can also print your insurance cards immediately. There is no waiting for your policy to be processed and your cards put in the mail.

Most auto insurance agencies offer the option of printing your auto insurance cards at home or receiving the hard copies in the mail.

So for those drivers who have computers but no printer, no worries. You can still get your cards mailed to you in a few days.

Look for Discounts

If you qualify for a discount, you would be crazy to turn it down. When you are conducting an online auto insurance quote, be sure to enter in all qualifying information that will help you to get as many discounts as you can.

Some discounts that you should look for include, but are not limited to, a multiple car discount, bundling discounts when you have your home and car insurance through the same carrier, a good driving discount for avoiding being involved in any accidents within the last three to five consecutive years, and military or veteran discounts.
