Understanding My Auto Insurance Policy

  • Deductible – The deductible is the amount you must pay out of your pocket before auto insurance companies will make any payment. The higher your deductible is the lower your premiums will be. In most cases, if your budget will allow a $500 to $1000 deductible you will find your auto insurance premiums quite reasonable.
  • Property Damage Liability – This insurance covers you when you cause damage to another person’s property. This could be their car or even a building. Liability insurance is the one auto insurance that is mandated by state laws and must be purchased.
  • Comprehensive – This will cover you if your car is stolen or vandalized. You may be most familiar with it for hail and fire damage.
  • Med Pay/PIP – These two coverage options are almost the same, but the right choice here could save you some money. Medical Pay will cover up to a certain dollar amount (depending on your policy) for medical bills while injured in your automobile. PIP insurance will also do this, but PIP insurance will also pay for lost wages due to an accident. If you are retired or don’t work, the Med Pay has a cheaper premium and you would want to consider it. If you work you probably would need the PIP insurance.
  • Collision – When you run into someone else, or even a brick wall, your liability insurance pays for the other parties damage, but you need insurance to repair your car. Collision insurance will make sure your vehicle has coverage and gets repaired. If you owe money on your vehicle, this coverage is usually mandatory by the lending institution.

Once your vehicle is completely paid for, you can drop collision coverage if you wish, but you must be willing to replace or repair your vehicle at your own cost.

An insurance policy is a contract and you can think of these five types of auto insurance as separate policies. The premium on each type of insurance is added up and totaled into one amount for your auto insurance policy.

Understanding these types of insurance will make you better prepared to select the right insurance quote for you and your family.

Information Required

Many people are concerned about leaving information on the web due to identity theft, but when you submit information for auto insurance you never leave anything as personal as your social security number or bank information.

Most sites ask for the following information:

  • Vehicle make, model, and year
  • Your name, age, and where you live
  • Your current insurance company if you have one
  • How many miles you drive per year on the average

Questions like these, plus other related questions, are needed for rates in your area because different parts of the country have different rates based on many demographics and other criteria.

For example, New York City’s rates will be higher than rates for someone who lives in a rural area where there is very little traffic.

When you take the time to search for auto rate comparisons on the Internet, you will get all the information you need all together in one location.

It is easy to shop around for the best auto insurance rates for your family and select a policy that fits every driver in your household.

Don’t keep paying high premiums for your insurance any longer without taking the time to check out the competitive prices online today.

Insurance companies want your business and are offering some really competitive rates to people taking the time to seek them out.
