Why Shop Around

Why would you need to get estimates for auto insurance? The main reason is that different companies charge different amounts for insurance. This results in estimates that can vary by hundreds of dollars.

To make sure you are getting the biggest bang for your insurance buck, you really need to get a range of quotes to see what the least you can pay is.

Insurance companies consider many things when deciding how much to quote you. Most people know that their driving record will come into consideration.

Other things they look at are your age, gender, occupation, where you live, and how much you drive. They even look at your credit history, says the FDIC.

The car you drive also has a lot to do with it. While safety and anti-theft features lower the cost, high-performance engines tend to raise it. Cars that are more expensive are also more expensive to insure.

With all these factors to consider, it’s no wonder that no two companies look at them all in the same way.

This is why it is important to not take your insurance for granted, but to shop around at least once a year to make sure you’re still getting a good deal.

You could also want to shop around because your company doesn’t offer some of the extras other companies do.

For instance, if having a deductible go down for each year you go without an accident appeals to you, you should get quotes from companies that offer this perk.

Contact Individual Companies

There are two main ways you can get auto insurance estimates online. The first is to contact the companies directly via their websites.

You can either do a web search for insurance companies in your area or go to the department of insurance website for your state.

They list all the companies licensed to do business in your state, often with links to their websites.

Once you get one their website, there should be an option to get a free quote. Before you start, you’ll want to get some information together so you can enter it when asked.

This usually includes:

  • Name, date of birth, and driver’s license number of all drivers on the policy
  • The VIN for all the cars on the policy
  • How many miles you’ve put on the car in the last year or two
  • The date of any tickets or accidents you’ve had in the last five years
  • List of safety features and anti-theft devices on the cars
  • Date and name of any safe driving course any of the drivers have taken

Once you’ve entered all the information, they should be able to provide you with a quote within minutes, sometimes even seconds.

On some sites, this will be provided on the same page, while others email the quote to you.

Use Easy Search Options

While visiting the websites of several companies is certainly quicker than making appointments with an agent for each company, as you used to have to do, there is an even quicker way.

There are websites where you can search and compare multiple quotes at one time. Normally you start by entering your ZIP code.

This allows us the search engine to pull up which companies service your area. Then you’ll enter the same information listed above, but you’ll only have to do it once.

That information is then sent to several companies for you. You’ll get the same results in just seconds.

Always remember that no matter how you get your quote from a third party search site, the company’s website, or even over the phone or from an agent, it is just an estimate.

The actual premium could vary from that number. Once you start setting up the policy with any company, they will find out more information.

This could either lower or raise this amount. So always be honest on your quote information, as this will make the estimate more accurate.

Know How Much Insurance You Need

Before starting your search for auto insurance, take some time to educate yourself as to how much insurance you need, so that you can get quotes for exactly that and nothing else.

This can save you a lot of time sorting through the quotes. Everyone has to have some amount of liability insurance to fulfill your legal responsibility to pay for any damage you cause with your vehicle.

While each state sets a minimum amount, you must carry to legally drive, in many states this is a very low amount.

In Pennsylvania, you’re only required to have $5,000 of property liability coverage. This amount will get you out of a ticket, but it won’t cover the bill if you total a $30,000 automobile.

This is why most experts suggest a higher level of liability insurance than the state levels. Some suggest an amount equal to your personal assets.

Some states also require you to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

This is probably a good idea to have even if you aren’t required to. Some estimates say that one in seven drivers is uninsured.

Uninsured motorist coverage covers your car even if one of these drivers hits you and leaves you holding the bag.

Remember that if you own cars that still have car loans outstanding, your lender will require you to keep comprehensive and collision on them until you pay the loan off.

Collision will cover the car if you cause an accident in it, while comp covers things like hail damage and theft.

The insurance company will also want to know if you want to add personal injury protection. In some states, this isn’t optional.

If you live where it is, evaluate your current insurance. If you already have health and life insurance, you might decide to decline PIP.

Ask About Discounts

Don’t overlook discounts. Insurance companies offer many discounts for a variety of reasons, so it’s likely you’ll qualify for some of them. Before buying an insurance policy, ask to make sure you’ve gotten as many as you are eligible for.

One thing you can do is to get a quote for homeowners insurance while you are getting car insurance estimates.

Since most insurers give you a discount on each policy you have with them if you have more than one, this is a big money saver on insurance.

Also, just having more than one car on the policy will get you a multi-car discount.

If you own some other kind of motorized vehicle, like a motorcycle, recreational vehicle, or boat, ask the company if they insure those as well.

It’s usually more cost effective to have them all with one company than to have separate policies for each.

If you have a clean driving record, be sure to ask if you get a discount for that.

In addition, defensive driving courses usually net you a further discount, even if you took it to dismiss a ticket.

Students under the age of 25 who maintain at least a 3.0 GPA can usually get a good student discount.

The reason you should have a list of safety and anti-theft features on your car is that the company will give you even more discounts for these items.

They particularly like advanced air bag systems, anti-lock brakes, engine immobilizers, and stolen car locator devices.

Finally, before deciding on which estimate you’re going to go with, do a little checking up on the company.

There are independent sources you can use to get an idea of the financial strength of the company and how they treat their customers.

The last thing you want to do is to buy a policy from a company that is notoriously stingy with payouts.

Places like Weiss Ratings can give you an idea of the financial stability of the company, while J.D. Powers & Associates ranks the companies according to customer satisfaction data they gather.

You can also check with the state department of insurance. Not only do they provide the list of companies in their state, but also they publish the number of complaints that have been filed against them.
