Things to Remember...

  • Pathfinder Insurance Company is a subsidiary of the Avis Budget Group headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey
  • Colorado-based Pathfinder exists as an insurance entity primarily for the purpose of providing insurance coverage for Avis Budget Group
  • Because Pathfinder Insurance Company does not maintain its own website, it is difficult for us to say exactly how the business works and how claims are made

Pathfinder Insurance Company is an unusual animal in the world of auto insurance. They are a subsidiary of the Avis Budget Group headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey.

Colorado-based Pathfinder exists as an insurance entity primarily for the purpose of providing insurance coverage for Avis Budget Group’s large fleet of corporate lease vehicles.

This unusual business model means that Pathfinder Insurance relies 100 percent on the Avis and Budget car rental companies to generate business. As their sales go, so does the business of Pathfinder.

This is one of the reasons why companies like A.M. Best tend to rate Pathfinder Insurance significantly lower than other insurance businesses.

Pathfinder Insurance Company Locations

We were only able to find one address for Pathfinder Insurance located in Boulder, Colorado. A few business research websites provided a Denver address but it could not be verified.

Furthermore, the BBB office responsible for the Boulder region lists Pathfinder Insurance as having gone out of business.

We doubt that’s the case since A.M. Best just reaffirmed Pathfinder’s ratings in January 2011.

In all likelihood, Pathfinder merely closed that office and merged its operations with the Avis Budget corporate office.

For your convenience, that corporate address is:

Avis Budget Group

Portland, OR 97220

Pathfinder Insurance Company Agents

Due to the limited scope of Pathfinder Insurance Company’s business, we can say without a doubt that they do not utilize local independent agents.

In fact, any “agents” they do utilize would simply be the employees that staff their leasing operations.

Leasing agents offer Pathfinder insurance to companies leasing their vehicles.

Those companies can accept the Pathfinder policy or provide their own through normal commercial insurance channels.

Although we cannot prove it, it seems that most companies would probably do better financially to provide their own vehicle insurance through their general liability provider.

Pathfinder Insurance Company Claims

Because Pathfinder Insurance Company does not maintain its own website, it is difficult for us to say exactly how the business works and how claims are made.

It seems reasonable that an insurance company so closely tied to a vehicle leasing company would process all claims through the local or regional office of the leasing company.

For example, in any major city with an Avis or Budget office, customers could lease fleet vehicles and receive the service.

In the event of an accident or other damage, the customer would probably contact his local or regional office to make an insurance claim.

That office would take all the information, fill out the paperwork, and submit it to Pathfinder.

This seems the most likely method as it would allow Avis Budget Group to avoid having to deal with separate offices and employees just to handle Pathfinder insurance claims.

Pathfinder Insurance Company Customer Usefulness

Again, due to the nature of Pathfinder’s business, their customer service is tied intrinsically to Avis and Budget.

It may be that Pathfinder policies would extend to passenger vehicle coverage during those times when vehicles are parked on the Avis or Budget properties.

But even so, car rental customers would be completely unaware of this coverage and would not be able to rely on it if they had an accident while driving a rental car.

It may also be that when Avis and Budget offer car rental customers the opportunity to purchase supplemental insurance, it comes through Pathfinder.

For fleet vehicle customers, it would seem that this type of insurance company would be ideal for a small business whose fleet operations comprise the vast majority of their liability.

In other words, a major shipping firm that owns multiple regional warehouses and employs thousands of people would find purchasing separate fleet insurance through Pathfinder to be financially infeasible.

A smaller business that only maintained limited office space while working the rest of the business from their fleet vehicles could find this insurance attractive.

Regardless, it is evidence that Pathfinder auto insurance is not a mainstream product a lot of companies are using.
