Things to Remember...

  • Empire is a BlueCross BlueShield company that only provides health insurance
  • Empire specializes in insurance products for businesses
  • Empire sells its insurance products through independent insurance agents and brokers

Empire is a BlueCross BlueShield health insurance company, which, for those of you looking for auto insurance, is going to be a bit disappointing.

The company was founded in 1934 as a New York-only health insurance company.

Today, however, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield sells products throughout the United States. Empire is a subsidiary of WellPoint, the largest public commercial health benefits company in the United States.

Empire Insurance Products

Empire sells a variety of health insurance products that include:

  • HMO
  • POS
  • PPO
  • EPO
  • CDHP

Empire not only sells health insurance but also manages its own company, which means that a management company isn’t responsible for keeping the company functioning or for the services that you receive if you choose this company for your health insurance.

As previously mentioned, Empire is a subsidiary of WellPoint, Inc., a company that you probably haven’t heard of because WellPoint typically stays out of the workings of its subsidiaries and lets them do their jobs the way that they should.

Although Empire specializes in products for businesses, they do also sell individual’s health insurance products.

Empire Agents

Empire uses independent agents and brokers to sell its insurance products. As a consumer, what this means for you is that it won’t matter if Empire has an office in the area where you live.

You will still likely be able to find an agent that knows all about Empire’s products and can sell them to you, they just won’t be working directly for the company.

Empire provides its agents with all of the forms and information that they need to sell Empire insurance on their website.

Another good thing about Empire utilizing independent agents and brokers is that, if they sell health insurance for more than one company, then you are going to be able to compare those rates and choose the company that offers you the lowest premiums.

A major downside here is that they don’t offer an online tool to help you to find an agent in your area.

How do you file a claim with Empire insurance?

You have a couple of options when you are filing a claim with Empire. Most of the time your doctor or hospital is going to file the claim for you.

However, if there is an issue, you can go on the Empire website and download a claim form.

After you have filled it out, which you can do on your computer, you will email it to the appropriate person.

Your other option is to speak to your independent agent if you have an issue with your claim or if you aren’t sure how to file your claim correctly.

Empire Careers

You can view available jobs and apply for them online. Because the jobs actually go through WellPoint, Empire’s parent company, you can look at positions for the company anywhere in the U.S., not just in New York.
