Farmers Roadside Assistance

Famers roadside assistance can be added to a policy for an average of only $2 a month, which is about $24 per year.

Roadside assistance through Farmers can be used by anyone driving your vehicle. You don’t need to be in the car, so if a friend borrows it and breaks down, they can call for help.

Coverage with Farmers roadside assistance includes more than 20,000 towing and road service facilities and 10,000 professional locksmiths in the United States and Canada through the dispatch service. Services with Farmers include:

  • Towing of your vehicle to a repair shop or home
  • Jump-starting a vehicle with a dead battery
  • Replacing a flat tire
  • Locksmith services if you are locked out of your car
  • Roadside winching to remove your vehicle from a ditch, if it’s stuck in the mud, or from any other place from which it can’t be driven

Although Farmers roadside assistance offers an array of coverage options, roadside assistance services are limited to a maximum of  $150. Any service totaling more than the maximum can be submitted by invoice, but there is no guarantee the money will be paid back to you.

In addition to the $150 cap, Farmers insurance will only pay for three roadside assistance services per year.

What is roadside assistance?

By definition, roadside assistance is an aid to the owner, operator, or passenger of a motor vehicle with an incident related to the operation of the motor vehicle, including jump-starting or replacing a motor vehicle battery, lockout assistance, or replacing a tire.

In other words, it’s emergency help for when you have car problems.

How do Farmers roadside assistance rates compare to other options?

Roadside assistance costs range depending on where you buy the coverage. Roadside assistance is offered through:

  • Auto insurance companies
  • Auto club memberships
  • Roadside assistance associations
  • Car manufacturers (usually free with car purchase)
  • Credit card companies
  • Cell phone companies

With the exception of a free roadside assistance plan offered by the manufacturer when you buy a car, auto insurance companies typically offer the lowest rates for roadside assistance. The highest rates will be an average of about $60 per year.

Auto club memberships such as those with AAA range in cost from $50 to $360 per year. Your rate with an auto club membership is determined by the number of vehicles on the policy, the maximum towing distance, and the number of individuals or family members on the policy.

Rates for roadside assistance associations vary by state and service. On average, you can expect to pay $50 to $115 per year.

Cell phone companies offer roadside assistance for about $3 per month. Towing services cost an additional $50.

It’s important to consider what coverage you’re getting for the price. A more expensive plan may offer additional perks that are worth the extra cost.

All in all, roadside assistance is an affordable option that you can add to your Farmers insurance policy for peace of mind. If you don’t have coverage elsewhere, like through AAA or your car’s manufacturer, it’s well worth adding to your car insurance.
