Things to Remember...

  • Driving uninsured is against the law in every state
  • Making sure you have adequate coverage is not only a smart decision but it is required
  • Research what types of car insurance coverage you need to make sure you are protected

There are many reasons to buy auto insurance if you are driving uninsured.

Regardless of the type of vehicle you own, all drivers are legally required to carry a specific level of car insurance coverage.

Because each state has its own insurance laws, it is important that you educate yourself before you begin shopping around.

A good resource for finding out about laws is the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Avoid unnecessary hassles by selecting a car insurance provider who will write the perfect policy to make sure you are protected.

1. You Will Stop Violating the Law

Anyone who does not have the bare minimum coverage is subject to fines or worse if they are stopped during a routine spot check or involved in a collision, even if the accident is not your fault or your vehicle is not badly damaged.

Standard procedure for all police officers who either complete a spot check or are called to the scene of a car accident is to request three pieces of identification:

  • Driver’s license
  • Vehicle registration
  • Proof of insurance

While some states will accept the insurance declarations page in lieu of the actual insurance identification card, you still must provide this information.

Failure to produce one or more of these documents may result in a fine, towing of your vehicle, or worse.

You may receive a summons to appear in court which adds to the overall costs because there are now court fees involved.

However, you may not have an opportunity to discuss your case at length and they may simply decide to prosecute you to the full extent of the law.

Should this happen or if this is not your first offense, you may be looking at expensive fines and quite possibly the loss of your driver’s license for a minimum of twelve months.

2. Your Driving Privileges will Remain Active

Obtaining car insurance can stop you from losing your driver’s license in more ways than you think.

For example, when your vehicle is registered with your state Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), they require you to provide them with a copy of your valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Each car insurance agency is responsible for reporting and/or updating their database with the MVC database.

If something appears conflicting, whoever originally registered the vehicle may receive a notice in the mail requesting proof of insurance.

If you are not able to provide acceptable proof of insurance, your vehicle registration may be canceled and ultimately, your driver’s license will be suspended.

3. You, Will, Have Protection against Lawsuits

Selecting the proper level of coverage ensures that if you are involved in a lawsuit, you will have the amount of money required to pay for any damages should you lose the case.

Additionally, the insurance company will make sure you have proper representation for any court proceedings, which will at the very least provide you with some level of contentment.

If you are found guilty and required to make restitution, your auto insurance will keep your assets protected.

Depending on the level of coverage you purchase and the limitations, you may not have to revert to using personal finances to resolve the issue.

4. You, Will, Have Medical Protection

Serious accidents sometimes occur. However, because medical costs are rising on a daily basis, it is imperative that the auto insurance policy you choose makes provisions for hospitalization and even post-surgical procedures, like physical therapy.

You should also reflect on short-term losses, like time away from work. Many people will have disability benefits from their job, but these options may not last as long as needed.

Having an added cushion of protection can ensure that no one suffers any additional losses because of an accident.

There are specific types of coverage that you can elect that will go far beyond the standard disability payments if you become permanently disabled, or if you cause someone else to become disabled.

If you are involved in a car accident and will not be able to return to your previous quality of life or you are the cause of someone else’s negative experience, you must make certain that everyone affected is properly cared for.

Additional Auto Insurance Options

By purchasing car insurance, you can rest easy if you are involved in a collision.

Certain levels of additional automobile insurance will provide you with protection from all types of damage including:

  • Damage due to hit and run collisions
  • Extreme weather like hail or ice
  • Issues caused by uninsured/underinsured motorists

You will also receive protection against theft, which, in certain areas, remains a serious problem. You can check with the National Insurance Crime Bureau or NICB, to see the top cars that thieves target.

When your car needs repairs, most car insurance policies have the option where you can select either a reimbursement for a car rental or they will pay for the car rental upfront.

Today, many financed vehicles come with options such as GAP insurance coverage. GAP or Guaranteed Auto Protection is always considered optional because you will pay an additional monthly rate for this service.
