Think you know your stuff when it comes to cars? We’ve put together a fun little game that tests out your car-kung-fu. The quiz is organized so you have a maximum of 4 points per question, and you lose more points depending on how many clues you ask for or how many times you guess wrong.

Some of the questions are pretty tricky, but it gets easier as you go because you narrow down the number of possible answers, so by the end you’re hopefully only choosing between a handful.

Many years ago someone stole my car. It was a 1988 Toyota Camry and I’d left it in a secured parking garage underneath my apartment building. The thief stole the car, filled the trunk with used clothing (the kind you’d find at a goodwill), and ended up parking it about 10 blocks away with most of the gas left in the tank. They also left a burrito wrapper from 7-11 on the floor. It wasn’t exactly the crime of the century.

I’m now the owner of a new car, and after doing a bit of research, I found that a new car is way less likely to be stolen than an old one. Newer locks, integrated security, and the resell value of older car parts are many of the reasons why your clunker is more likely to get GTA’d than your shiny new sedan.

We created a visual diagram which shows proportionally which cars are stolen the most in the US (original source here) You can also add this as a slideshow to your website using the HTML code provided here. Click on the below image to see the full diagram.

“Fewer dropped calls.” “You’re in good hands.” “Eat Fresh.” “I’m loving it!” “You could save a lot on car insurance.” “More bars in more places.”

Ever heard one of those slogans before? If you’ve spent anytime near a television or radio in the past ten years, chances are you have, and chances are those slogans now mean very little to you. I get it: corporations broadcast and repeat a slogan, customers get to know that slogan and associate it with that brand, and customers then eventually consume whatever product that brand has to offer. Unfortunately, this also destroys the meaning of the slogan itself. Whatever credibility it once had now gets turned into a cheesy sales pitch.

“You could save on car insurance,” is one of those phrases which suffers from this over-saturation. I drive a sporty, new car and I’m under the age of 30. After I got my car, I signed up with esurance at the dealership simply because I figured they offered paperless billing. My monthly premium was rather high, and I pre-paid for 6 months. When it came time to renew, I figured I’d at least call around and see what kind of rate I could get. To my surprise, the first competing insurance company I spoke to was able to offer me a much better rate. We’re not talking a few dollars here, but a HUGE difference. Turns out, simply by calling around the average consumer can actually save a bundle of money.

Unfortunately, trying to explain that to anyone you immediately sound like you’re selling something. Even saying “I saved $50 a month by switching to [some insurance company]” to my friends and family I feel like I’m being filmed in a commercial – repetitive broadcasting stole my sincerity.

I don’t know if anyone is truly “Loving it” at McDonalds,I don’t know how fresh subway sandwiches are, and I don’t know if Chevrolet actually produces trucks which are “like a rock.” I can tell you, however, that doing a bit of research before buying car insurance will save you money, despite how slimy that slogan may sound.

It’s finally here. The day you’ve dreaded for 16 years. Your teenager wants to get a driver’s license. Worse, he wants to drive your car. Actually, he’d prefer it if you bought him his own car. Red. Coupe. Something small and sporty. You know, something the chicks will dig. Do teenagers still say “dig”? No matter. You know what it means. And you know you won’t be able to keep him off the road forever. Sure, you may be able to get him his own car. No, not that one. The used one that only passes inspection because it came out the year after the Transportation Safety Board started mandating seatbelts be standard equipment in every car. The real question is, do you really want to add a teenager to your auto insurance policy?

There’s another day you’ve seen coming for quite a while, but it’s one you were looking forward to. A birthday. Your birthday. The one that would finally cause your insurance rate to drop because your insurance company decided at that age, you had finally outgrown your reckless driving days. What they don’t know about that rental car in Vegas won’t hurt them. But you barely even got to enjoy that brief respite for your budget before your teenager started making noise about driving. The thing is, you know very well how age affects auto insurance rates, and that a 16-year-old is considered a high risk, especially if that 16-year-old is male. That’s going to be more money out of your pocket than even before your birthday.

There’s nothing you can do about your kid’s age. He’s going to have to wait for that milestone birthday just like you did. But there are some things you can do to take the sting out of adding a young, high-risk driver to your auto policy.

The first thing to remember is, even though it’s going to cause your rates to go up, adding a teenage driver to your policy is still going to cost less than getting him a separate policy. Your age and driving experience still come into play in keeping rates low.

Make sure your kid is doing his best in school. This is a good idea anyway so he can get into a good college, which you’ll also have to pay for. But let’s not even go there. For now, some insurance companies offer a discount—some as high as 25 percent—to students who have at least a B average.

Does your teenager’s high school offer driver’s education? If so, he needs to take the class. If not, you’ll want to take him to a driving school. Many insurance companies offer a discount to students who have taken a formal driving course. It may only be 10 percent, but every little bit helps.

All joking aside, if you do decide to buy your teenager his own car, make sure it’s not one that is on your area’s frequently stolen list, one of the factors that affects insurance rates. Also try to get a vehicle with as many safety features as possible. Airbags and anti-lock brakes usually come with auto insurance discounts.

Don’t feel bound to stay with your insurance company if they won’t give you a good rate to add your teenager to your policy. In most cases, they’ll work with you. They may even offer the same discount you get for bundling insurance policies with them. But if your insurance company charges outrageous rates for teenage drivers, don’t be afraid to shop around to find a better deal, even if you’ve been with your company for a while. The goal here is to acquire good coverage that is cost effective.

Finally, have a good talk with your kid before he gets behind the wheel. Try to impress upon him the serious responsibility that comes with driving a car, and the consequences that can result from reckless behavior, just one of those consequences being higher insurance rates. Make sure he knows if he causes an increase, he’s the one who will be paying for it. And you both know he’d much rather be saving that money for that little red coupe he has his eye on.
